I try to stay at 1.2 mph. Last night was a real soft bite and we missed more than we hooked. We ended up with 4 and lost a pretty big one at the boat before the storm chased us off. I know this is a Buffalo page, but it's worth the drive to Dunkirk. For whatever reason, we are catching there when we couldn't in Buffalo and at the line.
Thx bottom bouncer I keep the boat at sp keep getting them
Jeff
I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I fish my suspended baits off downriggers, but was thinking of trying leadcore to make it easier. Can I fish wormharnesses off leadcore? Is it easier than using downriggers? What type of rod, reel, line weight, brand,, etc..?? Any suggestions about how to get started are greatly appreciated. Thanks- Brian
I fish leadcore all the time. YES you can fish wormharnesses off them, you can fish sticks off them. Most if not all charter captains will tell you that they use them. The theory is that the leadcore will act like a snake in the water giving the bait a different more desired action. Now for the complicated part - I have several reels set up ( Okuma ) with different lengths of color set up. Each will produce a different depth. Say a 2 color would go down approx 12 ft., a 6 color would go down approx. 36 ft., a 10 color approx 60 ft. It depends what depth you're in and how deep you want to go. Don't forget if you had a 2 color on and had a 15 ft. diving stick you would be approx. 27 ft. down or if you had a shallow diver you would be approx. 15 to 18 ft. down. The size of reel would depend on the amount of colors that you want to put on. Give Jim a call at Ultimate Outdoors of WNY a call if you want to shop local.
Thanks Captain Joe. I appreciate the info. I will definitely check out ultimate outdoors of wny.

Is anyone catching near Buffalo or SP? The bite in Dunkirk has cooled off (for me at least) and I was thinking of trying our end of the lake this weekend.

Not a good night last night - trolled from 5:30 to 8:30 on the line off the condos 50 to 57 ft. Didn't see much on the screen, didn't catch anything. Last week the screen was loaded in that area. What a year.

Not a good day again. 1 walleye 2 big sheephead. Marked a LOT of fish from 58 ft to 64 ft on the line out of the condos. They are not hitting. ????? What the heck? Trolled from 7:45 am to 12:30pm.
Things are getting worse.

jeff
We trolled about 3 hrs. yesterday. Picked up only 1 catfish. We were where we were last Sat. the screen was LOADED. They were not biting that good but at least you knew where they were. Yesterday we got excited when we seen one fish on the sonar unit. :):):( A few weeks ago we trolled and got a few at around 50 feet, then we went to 42 ft and the screen was loaded. We went to 42 ft the next time out - they weren't there. We found them at 50 to 55 ft. The next time out we went to 50 to 55 ft. - they weren't there we went to 55 to 61 ft and found them. Now again they are gone???? I've lost my carma. :(
im going on a buddy’s boat out of sbh tomorrow he going to try 60ft it’s been a really tough year
jeff
fished out of sbh 55-70 fow on the fence from 630-1130 got skunked horrible year
jeff
I didn't make it out today. :( But at least I didn't miss much. I put the question to the best fishing minds that I know ( Fishkiller ) :):):) and asked whats going on? His answer is " I don't Know " I was hoping that things were going to turn around in August but I guess NOT. For now anyways.
Fished out of SP Saturday and ended up with 4 wally's. West of harbor in 73 fow. All on harnesses. Marked little pockets of fish here and there but nothing like last year. All fish we marked were close to bottom. Last week we got skunked on walleye and 3 sheephead. Hopefully we get a late run before the year os over.
Went out of Safe Harbor Sat. Trolled from condos to Pt. Abino on the line then back towards Seneca Shoals. ONE SHEEPHEAD. That's it. :(

Yeah Jeff. Way to go. I went out of Dunkirk in my neighbors boat. The three of us boxed 15 walleye and 1 laker. We were using leadcore, downriggers, and deep six divers. All were worm harnesses. A diverse presentation. :) I hope things keep getting better.
Was out yesterday west of the Catt. 80-100 fow, started out all over the column but was getting hits on 5 and 7 colors using harnesses orange and purple. Moved the other lines up and ended up with 2 man limit in 4 hours, blue chatterstick on dr and alewife spoon on dipsy were hot baits. But seemed like everything took a hit or two, fish were in the 17-22" range.
Heard lots of limits, cleaning station was steady as people were trickling in.
the fish we caught 24-26 inches two where 30in everyone smack the dipsey hard
it’s good to see people catching fish it was a tough year
jeff
Picked up 6 out of Dunkirk yesterday. Nice size. Didn't see many on the graph. ????
Looks like another great weekend for fishing.
we don’t have too many weekends left
Finally got back on the water this week after a month off due to back problems. Monday evening was a bust, trolling motor broke and we got skunked. This evening was a lot better. Fished out of the Catt in 72-80 fow. Got 11, all on harnesses and 10 were on downriggers run close to the bottom.
Has anybody been fishing out of Barcelona? Gonna be there next week. Only been as far west as the Catt this year, any info would be appreciated.. Thanks, Mark
We fished Barcelona twice last month. Pretty slow both times. Only 7 keepers. The mouth of the harbor is closing up like SP, but you can get in/out on the east end of the break wall if there is traffic. Fished Dunkirk 2 weeks ago. A lot of marks on the screen but still slow. Just 3 keepers.
who would of thought the fishing would of been so tough this year after the last two years and the wind was bad also
jeff
Jeff I remember hearing an old timer ( look who's talking)who was retrieving his boat at Sturgeon Pt. one time say " Everyone thinks that the fishing will be great every year like it has been. But the lake will have great years then a few bad years. " " That's just the way it goes".
Why do I remember that? But he was right.
Fished on the line from before condos to Pt. Abino along the line. Don't go there. Did not do good. One channel cat and when I was releasing him the hoop from my net came off the handle. :( Good bye net. So if anyone catches a net hoop let me know.
We fished Dunkirk yesterday. Caught 9. 6 were 3 1/2 pounds plus. 90-100 FOW NW out of the harbor.
Fished out of the Catt this morning. Ended up with 5. Tried depths from 67 - 90 fow but never really marked many fish. Heard from the guy that worked the launch that the guys that did real well early were in real shallow (below 60 fow).
Went out of Safe Harbor. Went out the south gap in front of the windmills to Seneca Shoals then to the line. Along the line to the condos and past the condos. NOT A SINGLE HIT! :(
What a nice day for a boat ride.
