Hey Roy,
I hunt a lot, and use a thermocell to keep the skeeters away when it is still warm out. I actually had it on my boat a few weeks ago while we were docked out by the islands overnight. The mosquitos were unbearable, so we brought the thermocell. The next afternoon, the black flies had the ankles of my socks red from those biting buggers. My girlfriend asked if the thermocell would work. I kind of laughed at her, and thought. .. it can't make it any worse. Within 2 minutes, no more flies. We set it down on the floor by our feet and they almost immediately went away.
These things are between $20-$50 depending on what size you get. Refills are pretty inexpensive. The value of not kicking your own ankles or ruining your favorite hat by swatting at those biting bastards makes the $20 well worth the investment.
Guess I will quit laughing at the girlfriend when she suggests something unorthodox next time.
