I always thought that some of those are from lampreys... That was just an assumption that I've had, no reason other than sometimes when you catch a fish with a lamprey attached to it they definitely bleed and there is a sore there.

I always thought it was from the spring river runs. So many foul hooked, then tear free or you land them and release them. I have always smashed the barb on my jigs when river fishing, I think it does less harm to the fish and is way easier to back out. Just a guess.

Seems like an Dnr officer told me they were old snag wounds from the spring when they are so thick up on reefs and shallows.
