Precision Trolling App
So I mentioned a few days ago I just bought the trolling app, and my question is that the app only shows 10lb Berkely XT and Fireline.
I think I am spooled for 12lb Sunline. So the Sunline may be a bit larger diameter, so if for example I am pulling a Reef Runner 800 at 2.0 mph and I want my lure to bait to run at 20 feet, I will let out 60 feet of line. So using the larger diameter of a 12 lb line, how much more line will I need to set?
Thank you,
Bruce

Re: Precision Trolling App
Hey LD,
I am by no means an expert compared to many on this site. But...I'm not busy right now so I am happy to share my opinion and a little data to support it.
10# Berkley XT diameter = .014"
12# Sunline says .011"
The average human hair is .004 inches thick so you're pretty close.
Technically you'll run a tiny bit deeper. However, at depths like you are referencing at 20 feet down this will be negligible and irrelevant IMO. Likely even down to 30 feet or more.
Walleyes generally feed up. I assume many folks on here would agree to generally try and run your baits 1-3 feet above the fish. In warmer waters when they are more aggressive some say the fish can easily strike a bait 5-6 feet above them as it passes by. Makes sense to me as a 24 inch fish could do that easily with a couple quick swipes if their tail.
For your line, i would compensate a little if I were fishing 50-70 feet down in the Central Basin. For the western basin you could consider shortening your leads maybe 5 feet from that app numbers but not sure it'll matter if you are already planning to be a couple feet above them.
I enjoy the off-season chatter and.certainly welcome more opinions from some of the others here. Many have WAY more experience than I do.
Hope we can get out in March this year!

Re: Precision Trolling App
So if you choose to vary from the app....your actually let out a little less line, not more. Because even though your line is stronger it is .003 inches thinner than the 10# XT. Hope this helps.

Re: Precision Trolling App
most of the people i see posting on here running boards are using Berkley Big Game mono, at 20# test. cheaper and a lot more durable than those expensive lines. i think too many people are trying to treat this like an exact science with the app. too many variables for that IMO, and that 20# works great and catches a lot of fish. tight lines friends.

Re: Precision Trolling App
Yessir pfk. Another way to look at it is to use a few different leads to start out. Once you get 2-3 fish at the same lead, set more leads out at the same amount back.

Re: Precision Trolling App
We run 15# Maxima ultra green mono.I have dive charts I reference but we run lines at several leads to find out what's catching that day and change to the depth that's catching on the other lines. Its more important to calibrate all the rods so you can match the depth catching. With current and other factors contributing to the actual depth of your lure,it's not an exact science on how deep your lure actually is.Now if only running 3 lines,it's harder to find the correct depth catching. Many times too the fish you're catching don't coincidence with the fish marking on the sonar.

Re: Precision Trolling App
Excellent points Bob. I also run 15# mono - Suffix. Was able to get huge spools off eBay really cheap. Calibrating the line counter reels is certainly big. I didn't know about that my first few years. Fishing 411 has a great how to video on that on YouTube.
