Today was a first for me
Went out to cast for some walleye by myself this morning. I started on the south side of cone reef but the area was loaded with white perch so I moved to the north side of west sister island. I was probably a mile off the island. I fished about 3 hours and picked up 2 nice eyes and got two shorts. I said to myself at 11:30 one more cast. I was using an 18 count and I started my count. I don’t think I got to 4 and something grabbed my spinner and took off. I closed the bail on my reel and the line instantly came tight and a silver rocket flew out of the water. I eventually got it in and it turned out to be a steelhead about 20 inches long. I’ve heard of people catching them but I have never seen one in person. I can’t imagine catching a 20 pounder on a rod like I was using.

Sorry, I was just excited catching something I have never caught. I was fishing with a worm harness with white/red beads and a #4 gold fish scale Colorado blade. I had a 3/4 ounce slip sinker on. The wind was a little light but okay. I was moving around .4 mph.

Re: Today was a first for me
I was out there yesterday as well. Launched out of Metzger marsh and headed for the Island. No fish marked all the way there ! When I cane around the Island I saw the pack of boats. Went around the outside and began getting some nice marks. Set up my troll and experimented with speed and colors of worm harnesses. Finally got some hits, first two were throwbacks, one was just barely 15" but did not want to take the chance of being under so back he went. Ended up getting 4 more nice size in less than an hour. Green beads and a purple blade on one and green beads with a bright green blade on the other, each taking three if the six I caught. Nice day with low wind. My first walleye of the season!
