If you get Cabelas don’t get the green ones that come in the kit with various weights. I’ve lost all of mine because the don’t hold. I went with offshore based on a recommendation from a captain I respect a lot and they have been great! Porkchop express, thanks for that recommendation.

I use off shore boards so I just bought some spare clips and I use those. I attached a large snap to make changing weights easy.

I use the spare or used releases from my offshore boards with a big O ring and and a weight(usually 2oz) with metal loop on each end.I will wrap the line once around them too when I put on line. You can also use a rubber band to attach sinker to line too.

I use the knock off Offshore releases. (Offshore has gotten stupid with their pricing.) I then take a quality split ring (i forget the size) thats about .5 inches in diameter. On that split ring goes your release, and two cheap snap swivels. When you set up, you place your desired size weight on one of the swivels, the other swivel is placed over your main line at the desired distance from the bait, and you clamp your release on the main line. With this set up you will never loose a snap weight unless you break the main line. The nice thing about this set up is when you reeling in a fish, you just reach up and pinch the release and let it slide down the line to the bait. Another bonus is whether you are reeling a fish, or pulling rods, or maybe changing baits, when that snap weight hits your crank it disrupts is motion and it comes to the surface. Your weights, swivels, split rings, releases can be bought separately and you can make 15 snap weights (or more) for less than one of the Offshore kits. Next time to the boat I will take a pic and post it.

Fishhawk2700, what brand of knock offs do you use? I’ve seen some on amazon, but wondered if they stay on braided line or slide down. Thanks

Look on ebay. Search "Offshore releases" the knock offs will pop up. They are from china and you do get a bad one now and then but for the price it's worth it.I don't run braid very often and when I do it's with divers of some type. Braid is slippery. My guess is you would have to give it a wrap with the Offshore type releases.

That's a great idea. I loss two Cabela snap weights this year and was going to replace them before next season. I'll give that a try. Two ounces sliding 50 feet or so down the line would scare me a bit. But sounds like you have tried and tested it. You don't lose fish on that rig.

Been fishing them like that for a long time. As a matter of fact I run the weights all the time, even when fish are shallow. The reason I do this is because in Michigan waters with most wind direction you get "floaters" from the Detroit River. These are small pieces of weed that are all over the place. With the weights it tends to catch these pieces of weed and doesn't let them get to the baits and fowl them. Some days it makes a big difference. It keeps your baits in the water much longer between cleanings.

Fisherman's Central in Catawba has in line weight kits. They have three different assortments from $10-30. I got the basic one. Comes with 6 weights (2 each, 1 oz, 2 oz, and 3 oz) and 2 clips. I have 2 extra clips from my boards that I bought rings for. Just bought it last weekend and haven't tried them yet.

I purchased tattleflag kits for all my Offshore Boards, so that gave me a surplus of OR 16 clips. They even had split rings. Just spin on a 2.0z- etc. trolling sinker and your in business. I have never had one slip or come off. I hear about cheaper stuff or Knock offs, but I like to give fellow anglers and an American Company some business. So I do not mind paying a bit more and I have had to buy them once because they stay put and keep on working . Even on Power Pro 30 braid.
