I could be wrong but I do believe the transducer has to be in the water to read the depth correctly and the 8.5 ft is a false reading. There is a way to offset the keel on most units. Maybe some one will help and chime in. But like I stated earlier the transducer has to have a good contact/submerged with/in water for it to work properly.
