Actually questioned a DNR officer about this one day while being inspected. Was told that on Lake Erie in Ohio there is a 30 per person possession limit on perch. Cannot have more than that number with you no matter when you caught them. He even pointed out that if you caught your limit and went back to your car and put them in a cooler then went back out again and caught another limit....if you were to be checked while at your car you would get a ticket. Now a step even further, you go out one day and limit out, have them cleaned and put in a cooler in your car, then next day go again and do the same thing.....if you get stopped....you have more than one days limit in your possession and will get a ticket. He was very nice in explaining even though I don't necessarily agree with it.

Well if that's the case, I hope they never check any of our freezers!

"have them cleaned and put in a cooler in your car"

So long as you have that cleaning ticket the cleaners give you which is dated for the day when you have fish cleaned the ODNR will not ticket you. The cleaners are also required by the ODNR to maintain a log of who had fish cleaned at their facility along with the address of that person presenting the fish to be cleaned and the date the service was provided, so there is a backup system built into the cleaning industry for proof of service beyond just the ticket. Having more than one days limit in your possession while on the lake (key words are on the water/lake) whether the lake is frozen or not will result in a ticket unless you are on some form of commercial passenger transport(Ferry or Airplane) the ODNR does not leave the book work of when they are caught up to the individual fishermen.

When you go to someone like this, safe to assume you get the same fish you take in back? Do you have to prep, or package them in a special manner?

They weigh them in front of you and make out the weigh ticket with a stub, you have to have that stub to get your fish back, the other half goes in the uncleaned fish and stays with them the whole time, even after they are cleaned. I have never had a problem with his services losing fish and have always felt I have gotten my fish back. Best to get all the ice out of then while weighing them if having perch cleaned! They will have baskets for you to place the fish in before weighing. They will remain in that basket until cleaned then they wash and bag them and put them in a fridge.

Wakina, what I mean by this is.. I get so many comments from people (Did you save the Cheeks) I would think that there is money to be made by cutting them out. If some people want them then they have to pay to get them.. Boy if I worked for a cleaning place I could see me having a freezer full of nothing bu walleye cheeks.. lol

From what I have seen they put them in a dumpster and they are picked up daily or every other day with the cheeks still on the carcass. That is not to say that they don't save some of them but allot of those who clean fish for a living don't like to eat fish! I can understand that part of it as most cleaning facilities have an smell that does not induce ones appetite for the source of that smell. I save them for me, my wife does not like them only because they have a different texture than the fillets. I cannot tell you why as she only uses that as the reason she does not like them, so I go with the old saying Happy Wife Happy Life an I do not push the subject!

i have gotten quart bags of cheeks from a professional cleaner that owns a bait shop, the fish market on telegraph sells them buy the pound i bought some they were frozen not fresh. they are so easy to take out just start at edge with fillet knife and scoop out only takes a few seconds when i take my walleye to cleaners i take them home and zip them and take out all the red meat before i freeze them i tried to freeze them and then clean them before a ate them they had a little fishy taste but sometimes i like that as long as i know where the fish come from and was handled properly. but i never had a yellow perch that taste bad. now fish for supper tomorrow with homemade tarter sauce which hides a little bit of the fish taste
