Full ice out, no ice in the Western Basin? Most likely at least two weeks.

This weekend's well below normal temperatures will stall the melt and breakup. With 400+ square miles of probably around 6-12 inches or so thick (really don't know the ice thinkness as nobody can go out and measure it, just a guess) ice still in large sheets, not broken up, and well below normal temps for the next few days means the big breakup probably won't happen until later this coming week when the temperatures go back up to around normal for this time of year and we get some higher winds and rain. Yes, some of the ice has broken up, and yes, there is and will be open water, but with that much ice still out there and the eastern Lake still full of ice, it won't be completely safe boating ice wise for awhile, until 80-90% of the ice is gone. Water temps are still at 34 degrees meaning the subsurface melt is not speeding up. I know many have severe cases of cabin fever, but unless you just can't wait, the open water season won't start until around April 10 weekend. Sorry.
