first mate requirements
Just what does a person have to do to become a licensed firstmate?

You must be enrolled in a USCG approved random drug testing program and have a valid card on your person while first mating stating so. That's it.

The cheapest place I know is Sea Test. You need to have your initial DOT 5 panel drug test done first. Then when you get the results, you can fill out an application and send in your initial test. You'll want to call or email Dennis first, before you send anything. He's a captain and his summer residence is different than his winter residence, so he'll tell you where he wants the paperwork sent. I believe his first year is $60 and then $40/yr after that. The other place I know without looking it up is the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association. I haven't dealt with them, but I know others on here are. They may chime in.

That is interesting. I have only fished on a couple of freshwater charters, with the bulk being offshore ocean charters. I am surprised that there is random drug testing for mates. I could see this for captains where you are in control of the vessel, but surprising for mates.

This ensures to the USCG and customers on a charter vessel that you have a safe and confident crew taking care of YOU for the day. The captain is ultimately responsible for you and a good first mate assists with everything o the boat. How would like to have a mate that could be hooked on an illegal substance and could possibly have an affect on the safely of your day.
I use Maritime Consortium and its $65 a year. Find it online.
