October Perch
Saturday the 11th turned into a day-long slow boat ride in the choppy waters. We tried to find perch east of South Bass, south of Green, north of North Bass, over around D can, then G can, and finally back to the green buoy by the Catawba launch. And everywhere in between. There were other boats in these areas but we only gave each spot an hour t the most. We had some dinks, but no keepers. I got one really nice one to the surface by D can (probably 11") but it got off. There were several nets making a north-south blockade stretching from west of Green to G can. We did catch 6 different species which is neat, but nothing big enough to take home.
Today we went between L can and B can to 26 / 27 feet of water and we just stayed there. Started 1.2 miles SSW of B can and creeped to 0.8 miles from B can. There were about 20 boats in the area at one point. It took about 6 hours to use up our 3 scoops of micro emerald shiners. We were pretty busy the whole time, pulling up fish one after the other. But almost all were dinks, or white perch dinks, or walleye dinks. Only kept 15. Biggest was 10". You can catch yellow perch at that location, but you'd better take a lot of minnows and be prepared to stay a while.
I will say that I switched from #4 to #2 snelled hooks today and I think #2 holds perch a lot better. I will also say that gold hooks did a lot better than bronze.
