    Default Reef Near Cedar Point

There's a reef somewhere near Sandusky that I'm not able to find on my navionics charts. We were walleye fishing last year and not having much luck so we stopped out at this reef and had a lot of luck and fun pulling in some catfish. I was hoping someone could give me some details of where that is at from my vague description. Only other detail I remember was that I believe it was only 12-15 feet when we were typically in about 40 feet of water the rest of the day. Had a very good view of Cedar Point when we were there, felt like it was a bit west of Cedar point but could be mistaken. Also, I know this is walleye.com, but any recommendations out in the western basin for catfish besides this reef that I've been to?

    Thanks.

If you want to run out a bit you can catch all the catfish you want between middle bass, and north bass towards the west. Around sugar. Pull spoons on divers close to the bottom. They love wonder bread, or anything white. About 2mph. You may catch walleye, and sheep head too. Most of the cats are in the 5-6 pound range.

BTW if you don’t want to troll. Bottom bouncers with crawler harness will work fine as well

Man if you can get into the bay and fish the railroad bridge you will burn catfish up I'm still learning the big lake so I am no help in that department.

To my knowledge there are no reefs right outside Sandusky Bay. At the Lake mouth of Sandusky Bay (from the Lake end of the channel breakwall entrance) there is a small one just NW of the breakwall, it has a bouy. Forget what it's called. Otherwise, the only shallow water is along the shoreline west and east. To find a shoal or reef, you have to go to the SE corner of Kelleys Island.

Catfish are just about everywhere in the Western Basin, but during the day rocky areas are generally better. Put any kind of live bait down along the bottom and you'll catch them, along with drum (Sheephead) and whatever else happens to be there. Good 'ole nightcrawler on a weight forward spinner or a worm harness works fine (and will also catch walleye). I've had some poor walleye days when after we gave up on them, and just wanted some action, we let the Erie Dearies and worm harnesses drop down to the bottom and we always caught some sheeps and cats. Or a few days when I took a few non-fisherfolks out to just catch fish for fun, I'd head to an area like what was already mentioned in another post here, toss a nightcrwler on a hook with a sinker down along the bottom, and drift. No problem catching sheephead and catfish.

And yes, the entire Sandusky Bay is a hotspot for shore and boat catfishing.

Last year we were going perching out of Huron. But when we got to the mouth of the river, the waves were way too high for my boat. So we hid in the calm behind the lighthouse, hoping it would calm down later. I mean we were about 6 feet south of the lighthouse concrete, and about 6 feet from the breakwall. Dropped down shiners on perch rigs there and caught a monster channel cat, which took forever to get in on our light tackle and light rod. Moments later caught another monster cat in the same spot.
