Awesome write-up Juls. Nice job. The only things I would add to it is per your last point about watching the line angle so you don't drag around a fish. What we do in addition to this is leave the reels on "clicker" and set the drags just barely tight enough so that they don't slip. That way, if a smaller fish hits it, we can usually hear the drag slip a bit, letting us know that something is probably on there. I do the same thing with my boards, just in case I am looking at the graph or eating a sandwich and don't see them go back.
I also point the rod at the dipsey and pull straight back to release it, as that eliminates any rod-bend during that process.
