I just point the rod tip to the opposite side of the boat, while reeling it in behind the other boards...let that rod bend in half. It's designed to do that. This forces the board to stay back as it comes in.

If you point the rod tip in the direction of the board, or that side of the boat, the board will come up directly into the other boards....and, messy tangles are guaranteed.

Then, as the board that's being reeled in passes the inside board, the person reeling can straighten up and step back, so the board can be taken off.

Most smaller fish will swim up when they get hooked, making it easier to bring in behind other lines....and, the bigger fish tend to head to the bottom. But, a larger fish will also pull the board back far enough to bring it across the other lines without getting tangled too.

So far, this system has worked for me and my clients. I get a lot of novice anglers, and even they can do this. Is it perfect? Nope, but I give it a 95% rating on most trips.
