requesting info on west basin...Lake Erie
Going to West Basin (Put-in-Bay) with nine other crazy fishermen the last part of April. Really need your advise on tackle and lures.....
trolling...7' medium light rod.... Curado w/10 or 12#??
spinning...7'...light and a med light...Shimano w/6#, 8#, and even a 10??
taking broken-back rebels, small and medium Rat-L-Traps (shad, crawdad
and walleye color) + others diving from 3 to 10 feet.
Also some jerk baits, Zoom flukes..walleye color and shad.
What are the best lures, in your opinion, for that time of year 4/19 to 4/25.
Any suggestions would be welcome as I have never had the pleasure of
meeting Mr. Walleye in Southern Calif. Also, the guys from Omaha are planning on "borrowing" some $ from me in regards to fishing and poker.
NEED THE HELP OF YOU EXPERTS.....As I hate to end up 10th!
If you need any info on Calif fresh or salt or Alaska, just holler.
Thank you for your time and best of luck out there !

P.S. Also chasing smallmouth...

Welcome to Lake Erie, the Walleye Capital of the World. The walleye population in Lake Erie has ballooned in recent years so you shouldn't have any trouble catching fish, providing the weather cooperates. April is a hit and miss month when it comes to days you can actually get out and fish the lake. Plan on some weather related down time and that's where the poker comes in.
Watch the fishing reports on this web site in early April and see what is working, tackle wise. Then, you may want to supplement your arsenal by purchasing the hot lures at the local bait & tackle shops when you get here.
Good luck to you and remember to send in your Walleye Braggin board pics by emailing them to [email protected] or by posting them yourself on the Braggin board on this forum.

Walleye Rick,
Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to chasin' those good eatin'
little guys. I would invite you and your fellow fisherman to join us but
with a name like Walleye Rick, I feel we would all be bustin' our tails to
get second place. I love golf too but I would never ask Tiger if he would
like to join us. Just a lot of respect for your name!
Just one quick question....Are the purple hair jigs THAT good??
I see a lot of mention. But as you know, many lures are designed to catch
a fisherman.
And one more quick one...We thought being we are staying on the island,
any bad wind, we could just go to the leeward side and keep going.
Will we be in a decent area....Put-in-the-bay???
Thank you again for the courteousy..

Purple Hair????
Yeah your in a great area and you can go to the leeward side if weather becomes inclement. You can also fish for smallies on rock piles close to shore where there are decent drop offs after you have your fill of walleyes. The islands are known as one the best smallmouth fisheries in the USA. Make sure you get a good map of the island area for safety purposes. There are some shoals that like lower units and you need to know where they are, especially running at night. i.e. northwest of south bass & east of north tip of middle bass has a shallow reef. As far as purple hair jigs. Every boat has them or wish they had. But as in any lure the color this year could be green, red, pink, white, etc-- who knows yet. Last year Purple was tough to beat, but there were days when another color did out produce. It depends on water clarity which changes every day. Put your mind at rest and follow the posts. Everyone seems to be honest on this site and wants to share thier successes to benefit others. There are soo many walleyes out there that we cannot hurt the population. Heck I've shared so much I might have to rethink if I want to take as many bets. We bet on first, most, biggest, and fastest limit caught. Our record is 5 fisherman--8 minute full box. Done--now what? Overall record is 250 walleyes in 3 hours w/ 4 fisherman. We even stopped to drink a beverage and have a sandwich.
