smallmouth help

Buddy wants me to go smallmouth fishing with him in few weeks on his new 28 ft boat that he docked at cedar point. Any info on where to start ? Was thinking around kellys or south bass ? Also baits ? Thanks

I like to fish in the shallows around the islands where there are gravel beds. Softcraws are the only way to go for me.
