Lineman run to Sturgeon dont waste your time in Buffalo the bite there sucks right now. I'm near 200 perch out of Sturgeon so far in 3 trips get in 53-55 ft of water and keep moving around untill you find them. Here is the zone point marine forecast for the Sturgeon area for tomorrow, Wednesday: Variable winds 5 kt or less. Sunny. Waves 1 ft or less.
Thanks Fishkiller, do you know if we can launch at S.P.? I heard that the dredger broke down & they were letting people launch.
I dunno, if that is the case please post it here so we know, i hope your right.
Didn,t check out S.P.. The fishing & wind (3 footers) sucked today out of the Catt., my buddie got 70 nice perch out of the Sbh this am. We went to the wrong place I guess. ::(
Well looks like I'm gonna have to give you call fishkiller. I want some of them monster 15 to 17 inch perch for the wall. What month is best for them up that way so we can figure out a few days
Lake Erie is at 47 as of this morning, last year at this time it was 38. I bet were going to be fishing the day bite by the 3rd week of may.
I hope your right jim, maybe even sooner if long range forecast is right. Did you get out after the perch again yet. We got out thurs but headed north, had an ok day but chasing the big ones and biggest 23# and change ha ha pic is on my FB if ya wanna see.
All i can say fishkiller is, fun though. Lol looks like winter is gonna throw us one last hoora over night. Then its game on in just over a week.
Very true, I leave for Port Clinton in 12 days been working on the boat its almost ready.
Bailey - any time you get out is great. One pond or the other - it's all beautiful. Well i'm happy to say that I got the trailer lights / power working properly. Thanks to the mechanics at Olson's. It was like pulling teeth. From the Marine dealer to the Hummer dealer and back to the Marine dealer I tested the trailer today and everything seems to be working correctly. Finally had the oportunity to check it out today. Now I can back to outfitting / rigging the boat to perfection. Everytime i get my mind set to what i want to do i change it. Options, Options, Options. Hopefully I will get it out this coming weekend. Any one behind me at the ramp please be patient. I've got a lot to learn about this boat. Fishkiller - you better heard those fish this way.
FYI - The weather buoy is functional. I noticed it today.
Perch outlook for the weekend anyone?
Does anyone know if so will be launchable this weekend?
The marine forecast looks good http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/LO/042.html .this is the one i use. Hope it helps
Oops. Stupid auto correct. What I ment was is sturgeon point launchable this weekend. But thanks for the forecast. Looks like it won't be to rough
:mad:Well I ALMOST made it to the water today. I'm getting closer. I was about a mile from the launch at the Small Boat Harbor driving down Ridge Road. I saw a puff of smoke in me rear view mirror, my partner says " I smell Something" I saw the battery light come on to dash. I pulled over and took a look at the plug from the vehicle to the trailer. The wires were melting through the harness under the vehicle. At first i thought the wires contacted the muffler. But after further investigation the wires melted from the fuse box the the trailer plug. Now the directional signals are messed up. Oh Boy! I went to the boat dealer the vehicle dealer, back and forth to get it right and this happens. Anyone have any suggestions on where to get this mess straightened out? After all of this it may have been a loose wire that caused all of this?????
That doesnt sound good joe at all. I would start looking at farthest point wires burned. The fact it burnt all the way to fuse box is confusing. Fuses shoild of popped, my thought is ehat kind of pain +$ to fix wirings of the hummer. Not a good start to the year! !. You hauled the old rig with the hummer right. What difference between old trailer wiring and the new one?
Joe, what were your issues before that you had the trailer in the shop for? Burning all the way to the fuse block doesn't make any sense. Like bailey said the fuses should have burned out, long before they melted that far. That's what they're there for. What size fuses were in there? 30s? (green). If you have a separate fuse block for trailer wiring like I have nothing should be over 15amp( blue). Are you running a 4 flat system? Or the 7 pin with trailer brakes? If it is 7 pin and electric brakes I would say that the brake battery is back feeding the system possibly and melted everything. The strange part is you made it Down the road always before it happened. Do you remember if you were on the brakes, lights on, or turn signals when it happened? You could also have a wire chafed through somewhere causing a short to ground. But again that's what fuses are for. The only other thing I can think is you have soooo many lights on your trailer that the wires couldn't handle the load through them and over heated. But you would have to have alot of lights. Ha ha. But anyway, that's all I can think of for the moment. Wait! If you do have electric brakes and the system shorted out, it's all in the same harness on the truck and would have melted all the wires without blowing fuses.
I've been hauling a boat from the day that I got the truck. My old boat trailer had surge brakes. This new trailer has surge brakes but it has a solenoid on the trailer so when you back up the brakes don't come on. Initially I found that the wire which would go to the reverse light was never hooked up. I took it to the car dealer to hook it up. Something wasn't correct. The car dealer said that the pigtail that I got from the boat dealer was crossed. I went to the boat dealer and had it checked out. We found that the wrong wires had power going to them. We adjusted the wires to correspond correctly. I tested it last week and it seemed to work properly. Yesterday I went for gas and everything worked. When I was driving to the marina was when I had the meltdown. I found that the red (hot) went from a terminal around the fusebox was never fused. I believe something grounded out. Maybe the plug? The truck frame? Anyways it kept drawing until the insulation melted and the wire broke apart. ??
4 more days and ill be in Port Clinton fishing the western basin Walleyes and drinking some finely aged Capt. Morgan...lol
good luck fishing and push the fish back this way when your done with them
. Joe correct. And that wire should have been fused at least with an inline. Where does the red wire go? Your reverse light wire? I believe the reverse wire in the connector should be purple. Red is to supply battery voltage constant and should be fused. Is the entire harness cooked?
The red wire was a constant hot from the fuse box to the plug below the back bumper. It was never fused. It was like that since I pucked the truck up new. It was never an issue until now. Oh yes the entire harness was melted at the plug and as far up that touched the red wire. It's at the car dealer now.
SUCCESS! I believe. For now. Picked up the truck yesterday -It was working good. Hooked up the trailer in the yard - everything was working there. Now i've got to test it on the open road. Hopefully everyone gets out this weekend an has a good day.
Earlier in the spring, many were saying that the Lake temps were ~3 weeks ahead of "typical". Now that we are coming up on opening day, it seems to me that the gap is decreasing (between present & typical). It this correct? In other words, should we expect the fishing for this weekend to be similar to late May in a typical year, or more like early May?
Thanks for your thoughts.....
Joe
I would say from what I have watched as far as water temp. We should be getting a mix of fish. I'm gonna skip Friday night and head out sat evening, I think depending on time, start shallow and work deeper depending on bite. Or vise versa depending on the time I get out
I'll be out next sat to give em hell good luck all let us know how you all make out. This spring has been next to unbelievable for all types of fishing lets hope it carries over to erie eyes. Joe glad the truck is hopefully fixed and right, shoot me a text if you get out. I'll be giving a case of lead poisoning to a bird or 2 then its time to chase some eyes myself.
I'm going to try to get out Sat. night. Good luck to everyone.
capt joe good luck sat i will be out there also where are you going to fish at
The plan is off the windmills. Out of the small boat harbor.
capt joe i think im going to do the same i also might try out by the departure bouy if it get to crowded
We will be heading for Put in Bay Ohio at 6:00 am, the trucks all packed, boats ready and hooked to the truck, its prime time to slay some Western Basin Walleyes.
Hey good luck you guys can't wait to hear how you do. I'm in the process of getting my kicker motor installed found a good deal and and pretty stoked about having a backup/trolling motor, can't wait to get out on the water again.
Milt - good luck. I didn't want to make a maiden voyage at night but you gotta do what you gotta do. You might see some unique manuvers at the launch ramp. Be kind to me.
Fishkiller - here's one for you - you can brag about it in OHIO. while your around the fire. I finally had a chance to plug in some of the numbers that you gave me. You put me in the Atlantic Ocean off of Charleston NC. It was some 653 miles. I wouldn't mind being there right now but it will be a trick to navigate a straight path to that area. check your PM. Yeah, you will blame it on my hearing.
Well, to answer the question that I asked the other day, I found a site listing temperatures at the water treatment plant at the mouth of the river (30 ft deep). Today, the temp is 47F. For the past few years, we hit or passed this temp on the following days:
May 23, 2011: 48F
May 14, 2010: 48F
May 11, 2009: 48F
We has a miserable spring last year, and the night bite seemed to start (for me at least) in the last weekend of May. So, my guess is that we may be about 1-2 weeks ahead of "typical", and about 1 week away from good action long-lining sticks...
Joe
I went out tonight to do a little Pre opener scouting. Mainly looking for half sunk trees in the trolling path. Surface water was at 63f. Put two lines out and got nothing. I did not go in front of hoaks. Where I was has always produced limits. I did not search deeper. Maybe these fish are in Post spawn.
