    Default March/April Jigging

I read a lot on the western basin forum about jigging hair jigs early.....venom with stingers; purple and dark colors. Curious, does anyone every do that in the central? If so, what do you target FOW? Tributaries? Thanks for any insight.

Hey Nick. I don't do any jigging out there or I would help if I could. In the west they focus on the reefs. Not sure how much structure there is offshore....not much to my knowledge.

Can catch them casting spinners but the water needs to warm up first for that is what I understand and have personally seen.

Hoping to be out there fishing out of Huron Early April. Hoping people will start posting results soon! We did real well early March there last year. I saw Capt. Protkchop is already fishing and I have seen several boats on the Huron Webcam.

    Good luck soon!

Nick, the spring jig bite is definitely there in the western part of the central basin. Get a good map and look for structure in 10-15 FOW. Hair jigs work but I personally prefer blade baits. Haven’t had the chance to head out yet this season but it will be heating up any day now.

The walleye gather around and on the reefs in the western basin to spawn. I'm not 100% sure about it, but I believe most of the spawning is done there. There are resident fish that spawn in the central basin, but nothing compared to the reefs. If I were going to try the central basin, I would find structure in different depths of water from 10' to 20' and try all of them until I found fish. but if I had a trailerable boat I would go west.
