What assumption are you referring to?
Thanks for your detailed report. What were you using? Spoons? Cranks? Harnesses? They all react very differently during a pause like you were doing. Cranks rise, while the other two fall (unless the spoons are behind Jet Divers). Speed changes in general (up or down) are great ways to trigger bites. When I see marks on the screen at or near the level I am running my baits, I like to change speeds up or down to get them to fire. Sometimes 3 or 4 lines will go at once. If you watch underwater camera footage, you see how fish will often come in behind lures and follow for quite some time before they commit or many times just swim away.
