lake trout
Hello I am just curious if any of you icefishermen or ladies that are fishing around Davis Besse area are catching any of the lake trout that the state released about 2 years ago. Thanks for any and all replies. It sure would be great if they would make a come back.

I read somewhere they released 20,000 or so from left over Michigan stock at Cataba like 8" or so. Don't think they are very big yet and probably went east. They like deeper water and that's ok as they are competing with top of the food chain fishes like our beloved walleye. They are not very good table fair IMO either. Pretty fish...look like pike or musky???

I also agree. I'm not a big fan of the taste either. Caught a bunch up north as a teenager. They are ok, I guess, if you don't have any walleye or panfish. Just my opinion

In Lake Michigan they spawn in late fall in the main lake around the rock piles on the south end. So I think it would be a possibility to pull one out on the west end of Erie when water temps are below 45. By the way they are excellent smoked.

Here are a couple of links that touch on the when, the where and the why the Lake Trout were released. It also touches on what area of the country the Brood stock originated from and what Hatchery they were raised at to stockable size.

About 10 years ago I caught a steelhead through the ice near Middle Bass. Knew right away it was no walleye. Took a pic and let her go.
