They don't eat the algae, however the algae produces toxins that store in the flesh of the fish. What extent i have no idea, which is why i asked. This is from the above report.

Fish that have survived (the algae toxins) aren't recommended for unlimited eating because of the toxins their flesh holds. Some fish shouldn't be eaten at all.
