In the mid 50's trolling was the preferred method to fish for eyes. The water was clear, really clear and you could see bottom in 10 ft of water on all the reefs. If you can imagine the mayflies being worse than now rest assured they were alot worse in the 50's, Port Clinton used snow plows to pile them up and loaded them on dump trucks with end loaders to be hauled away. Please ask the older crowd around Port Clinton and get the answer if you have doubts about how bad they were. When the water became clouded in the 60's that is when the drift and cast method became popular, now that it is cleared up alot the trolling method makes it easier to catch fish as you can move your lines away from the boat with planer boards and target those boat shy eyes as they move away from the boat even the shadow of a drifting boat can and will spook Erie eyes.
