VHF radio check

What channel can I monitor,

to hear and tell if new radio works and I have good connection to antenna.?

Boat is 30 miles from shore, inside garage,

Hopefully shakedown run saturday.

I would monitor 71 where the members of this site hang out while on the water!

While in your garage you can or should be able monitor/receive at least one of the weather channels.

Once on the water and out of the marina make sure your radio is set on 25 watts or high and then while on channel 71 key the mike and plainly state " RADIO CHECK 71 PLEASE RADIO CHECK 71" then imediately release the mike button and wait for a reply, if you are getting out with your radio and receiving properly you will probably her "Loud And Clear" from someone who is responding to your radio check. That is how most check their radios for transmit and receive.

If your boat is inside with the antenna down and laying on the boat it may need to be raised a little bit to get better reception. Or better yet outside and raised to the proper height.

Yes, marine radios are line of sight. The radio signal only goes out in straight lines. The taller your antenna the farther and better signal you have.

Use your scan feature to listen to what's going on. When you get a good signal, then lock into that channel. If it becomes quiet, then scan again.
