Damn bailey. I was wondering where you've been. Yeah I'm hopin to slip down the field edge before first light and set up for a shot as the buck works his scrape line down the tree line. Sure wish we could use rifles in Erie county. Still trying to decide between the 20ga sabot gun and the muzzleloader. Leanin towards the smoke pole. Both guns have 3x9x40 scopes. I've shot paper out to 200yds with the 20ga. ( benched ). Smoker is a tack driver though

My only thought to that copp is i like my second shot being able to go down range instantly early in season but love the muzzles myself. It's a toss up for sure. I lost a nice buck do to inexperienced mistake mainly lack of patients, i took a 45 yd headshot and only pierced the ear lol with knight the buck went 20 yds to where my 2nd shot would've done the deed. I may of got better shot off if i waited but i am sure his direction of travel wouldn't of given me it. On the bright side a yr later in same area i took a 151 10 pt with an ear half missing from a gun shot, i like to think it was the same buck.

I bet it was the same deer. I agree on the having a second shot but my house has two big fields and a small stream and thicket separating them. Most of our shots are 80yds +. Farthest deer I've shot was 133yds.

    Thumbs up

I would go with ol' smokey if I couldnt use the rifle. I have the Savage ML 10 II. I have shot 5 deer over 200 yds with that gun the furthest being 236 yds.

Last time I saw a savage fur sale the guy wanted almost 600 for it. My buddy has one and that's all he uses. I bought a cva last year. Bergura fluted barrel thumb hole stock. Scope. I've been nothing but happy with it. My sister even shot it for the first time over the summer and killed bullseyes at over 100yds. Hornady sst sabots group tight.

What bullets are you using? How much drop are you getting at 200?

I use 48 grains of IMR 4227 powder with a 300 grain Hornady SST. I have a 150yd zero with 4" drop @ 200 yds. At 200 yds the bullet still smashes right throughthe deer, unfortunatly I have never recovered a bullet but they sure do perform good. I shot around 20 deer with that gun. Its my favorite gun but as bailey said just no follow up shot if need be. My 2nd favorite gun is my Savage Model 12 heavy bbl Varmiter in .22-250. It took a nice 6pt and 2 does last season by my brother in law.

As long as I'm not chasing trespassers that are color blind and can't read, it should be a good day. No rain, no wind. Time to start filling the chest freezer

Hopefully at this time tomorrow we are all bruising our shoulders letting lead fly lol. After a few phone calls and eliminating a few out of the mix i am headed to the spot i planned on hunting originally. There is a buck outside the ears and at least 15 inches in height there it'll be interesting to see who gets him. On the bright note there are 14 people hunting property that backs up to the one we hunt and my stand is in the funnel connecting them. Gonna be fun. Jim that is a shooting machine you have there. I will own a smokeless soon i hope.
