Winter ice and new shoal dangers
Thought this warning needed it's own thread.
The thick winter ice may have moved bottom structures around, such as boulders, on the reefs and shoals. Just because it was safe to go over a spot on a shallow shoal last year doesn't mean it will be safe this season. You'd be surprised how big an object and how far the ice can move it. Not rare for ice dams and pressure ridges to extend down a long way, even as far as 50-60 feet (there are short trenches in the Central Basin dug out by ice ridges). So be careful this season, check out the shallows before you go running over them even if you've done it for years.
