I like the idea of calling out walleye.com. Guys who head up for several days may not be able to post the night before.
This is a great idea. I have read over this sight all week before heading up, but when I got up there, things have changed and the fish have moved on.

Hey guys this is riverrat. I live below columbus and started walleye fishing last year. I have a 17 ft deep v that i usally take out around the islands.I think the channel 84 is an excellent ideaseeing that i was out several times last year and end up perch fishing because i cant find the walleye. I get all of my info from this site and i want to thank all of you for the help i have gotten so far, and look forward to getting to talk to some of you on the radio.

I read this site often and have seen the conversation about radio channel,so I have decided to create an account so I can write.
You could say I have grown up on the lake I am the proud owner of a 27'sportcraft out of Meinke Marina West ,my grandparents ,father, myself and now my son had-have boats and have fished the lake many years...
my family, friends and myself fish the spring jig than will cast through the end of June mostly not fishing in the packs but as loners and seem to do as well as anybody we hear of,we than begin filling our freezers with perch!
If we do find a hot spot my family-friends will normally do the cell phone thing to give our location.
I will monitor 84 and as long as I feel comfterable there are not 500 boats doing the same thing and we get into the fish I will share with all of you.
We are heading to Burt Lake Michigan this coming weekend to find some ice than hope to have the boat in the water here in late March.

Looking for suggestions on the cheapest radio that will work on the Lake. Is a 6 watt handheld unit enough?? We only get to Lake Erie less than half a dozen times each summer. I always use this site to decide where we are going, usually out of meinke's or Catawba. I have been wanting to get a radio for a while but haven't committed to spending the money. If I get one, I will definitely let people know if we get in to fish. Any ideas?
Oh and to help the next guy out, I always try to do a follow up post on how the day went.
Watch for sales on radios.Don't know what your boat is, you would be better off looking for reg. radio setup. Longer range for transmitting and recieving. $ about the same if you shop right.
Radio idea is great. We're also working on a mobile site for walleye.com fishing reports and forums so you could easily send and receive fishing reports from your phone. More later so stay tuned ....................

Episnoza, I use a cobra MR HH330 hand held radio it is submersible and floating.me and a buddy use them and have had no problems with them they have weather band alerts and go up to channel 88 i think.. Check on wholesale marine.. they had the best price when i got mine.. Hope that helps ya .. I just looked on wholesale marine 119.37 and it is 6 watts.:)

Sounds good to me, I will have one radio on ch84. going to need all the help with the price of gas. All the talk about fishing I want to get the boat out and do some fishing! I think I am going to run up to the lake today and see what is going on, hope the docks are stating to go in.

This is a fantastic idea for those of us that can't get out as often as we'd like to......and when we do, it's not a situation of being able to plan on it- and choose the time to hit the water.....the time and the situation chooses us!. With that, there's no telling who's out there (and on the radio) that we know.....which greatly decreases the chances of having a good run- ending up with hit-n-miss.
Kudos to who thought of this!

I tried 84 several times this past Sunday with no answer. Guess you guys weren't on the water.
Boat is not in yet, hopefully 3/23 will be on 84
If things are like I think they are, the channels you are talking about 24 and 84 are marine operator channels that were designated by the FCC for use in public sea to shore telephone communication. They are encripted meaning you can only hear one side of the conversation. They are also ( or at least used to be) used by Telephone companies only. A lot has changed in the last few years but be aware there may be problems with these selections. That's the very reason the Non-Com channlels are all cluttered. The rest are all off limits for reports and day to day hailing and chatter.
When I say that the channels are encrypted and you can only hear one side of the converstion the reason is you are transmitting on one frequency but your radio automaticaly receives on another because the on shore operations from the telephone company tranmits on a different channel. I am very sure you can not transmit boat to boat on any of the ship to shore dual frequency channels. Your radio does not have the same frequency in transmit and receive as it does in single frequency channles such as 68 or 69. Again the reason for the clutter on the single freq. channels. The channels you have available for ship to ship communications of other than safety related (ch06) are very limited, all other channels are fairly strictly regulated and may involve problems for the user for other purposes.
