Are the mayflys hatching in the Huron area?

I was up on Sunday, Port Clinton / Catawba / Marblehead. The hatch had started but wasn't thick. Same while out on the Lake. I would think this coming weekend will be around the peak including Huron.

Mayflies are the worst! I'll take 3 ft. waves before battling those nasty flies. The worst part of the flies is that they find their way to EVERY part of the boat and equipment. Gotta be some decent wind to keep them away.

Mayflies the worst??? They are a sign of healthy lake environment or river if that is where they are. How do you think all the baitfish grow to get eaten by the hordes of walleye and perch? They need something substantial to eat like Mayflies and Midges. Neither of them bite.

    Biting flies are the worst!

I'd rate them: a swarm of muffleheads, biting black flies, mayflies. Mayflys don't bite they just make a mess. My experience is they don't bother you much on the water and if they do you can get away from the hatch. Their hulls are ugly and they probably mess up the fishing but I think they are mainly an onshore problem. My question is how is the hatch in Huron. I'm planning to come up Monday and I'm trying to figure out if I need to bring the cover for my boat. Any update from someone onsite would be appreciated.

I completely understand about mayflies being a sign of a healthy lake. At least with biting flies you take measures to keep them away.

North wind pushes them ashore pretty heavy north wind that is why they seem so bad!!

Today, ten mayflies on my screen door, yesterday just two. The hatch is definitely on! This week will be the peak.
