Default Lure depth - boards vs flatlining

Is there a difference in depth of a bait if it trolled at 50 back behind a board or flatlined straight off the rod (assuming both rigs are set up with the same line, lure, speed, etc)? Seems like a rod tip that is 6 ft above the surface of the water in a rod holder would impact the lure depth differently than a bait behind a board.

Yes it would impact the depth of your lure. The amount of line above the water would effect the lure depth if using a flatline or a big board. With an inline board the line is already in the water.

I flatline a lot. To get the depth from trolling data I do two steps. First, let out the amount of line from the data. Second, I put on a small clip on weight and slowly let out more line untill the clip just kisses the surface of the water. Example 60 ft for depth plus 40 ft to get the line down from the rod tip to the water surface. 100 ft total. Make adjustments as needed for boat speed.

    Good Luck!

Same idea as CaptKen, once l have reach the desired depth we half hitch a rubber band to the line at the rod tip. Let the line out until the rubber band reaches the surface of the water.

Using a line counting reel we have seen a much as 15 feet between the rod tip and rubber band
