Looking at quotes for Boat Insurance I got one from Progressive $675.00 a year that includes Vessel Towing insurance , all fishing gear ,trailer, liability injury And Stated value coverage for total loss $9000.00 of the boat any thoughts ? seems a little high since we have 4 to 5 month lay up over the winter .
I have my boat covered at full replacement value of $105,000 plus contents for $488.00 per year. Anything happens to it, I will get $105,000. Prior to this boat, I had a 27 ft Searay Amberjack and the annual was around $450.00 per year.
A lake erie on line camera gives a couple of views to the lake shows catawba ramp viewing the lake, vermilion, put in bay , Lake Erie Webcams | Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands
Helps pass the time waiting till spring If you look at the lake views then check the wave report for that area you get a idea of what wave height looks like pretty cool
Thanks for letting us know about webcams.Neat to look at and get feel for conditions.
The NOAA link is NDBC - National Weather Service Marine Forecast FZUS61 KCLE
Looking at the Catawba camera it's view is west so Davis Besse cooling tower is seen . You can look at the steam exhaust and see if it matches wind direction and the wave height in the report, Now today shows wind out of west and 1 to 3 foot waves but camera shows wind north west and waves about 1 to 2 . But I'm no expert on the lake conditions may be some one else out there Can add to this post with some of there experience and knowledge.
Boy the lake looks good on camera winds out of the southwest any body fishing ?
Thanks Eyecrazy that's what I was thinking . I am going to shop around a little and get a few more quotes before pulling the trigger our boating season is only about 8 months or so , the rest of time its on land and so far is kind of hard to sink a boat on land!
I Also have Progressive on Boat , bundle it with my Broker with House , vehicles , Camper , Rentals , Business etc
the more you go through a Bundle with a Broker the more you can save
They own Perferred Insurance Network Perrysburg , Ohio may be worth your time to call them
Well, it can still be stolen, vandalized, catch on fire, equipment can be stolen, involved in an accident while being transported, or if a kid is playing in it (even unauthorized) or a person is helping you and gets hurt, there is a liability issue. (Been there and/or seen that)
From the Catawba Erie cam this morning I see a single boat drifting in the fog Hope they do some good Wind out of the West and just a mild chop on the water ,
I know you said early on that the stringers have been replaced, but if you bought through an online auction, I'd still question their integrity... How long ago were they replaced, and how good of a job was done? I'd suggest having a marine surveyor go over it before putting too much investment in the rest of the boat. I'd hate to see you put $10K or better into other stuff only to find out she's about to split in half over one good wave...
I am looking for a 27 foot Sportcraft hardtop for parts windshield hardtop needed or whole boat that is not running or seaworthy let me know thanks
Headed up Tuesday to check boat and pay on dock for this year looking to do a little work on the boat if weather permits it wont be long till were all doing the jig , I will shoot some pics of the lake while there and share if I see any thing interesting
Ordered a new 54 " Drift sock Lindy drift control has any body use these ? they make several models . I had a really good Amish made one that I like a idiot gave away .
Amish Outfitters are the best
I went to the Marina Tuesday drove arround not see anybody working on Boats! It was pretty Cold Though !
Yes Capt it was made real well , looking at the Live Cam a few min ago several boats off Catawba making there way towards the reefs looks like great water very calm steam from the stack almost straight the water is still really cold 37 degrees what do you think at about 39 degrees we will start catching fish ?
My Friend is trolling and doing well , jigging is still about 3-4 weeks away
Ok Capt. That gives me a little time to do some repairs and upgrades ! Was up at Meinke Marina today gorgeous day a little windy but warm , marina is still full of ice and ramps frozen in .
Boy if any one wants to see a pretty picture log onto Erie Webcams Lake Erie Webcams | Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islandscheck catawba Island view the water is as about as pretty as I have ever seen almost looks like the ocean, blue and clear all the way to the smoke stack looks like north west winds and just a walleye chop cant wait to get out there
I was able to spend some time last Friday getting some work done replaced starter , Oil cooler , raw water pump , new batteries , replaced belts. oil and filter etc . boat started right up and idled smooth looking forward to maybe getting the lift to set her into water Wednesday , as I have been reading the fishing is improving so going to see how she does . Just a note to any who have a Coast guard documented vessel the cost to have it transfer currently is $450.00 and it takes up to 6 months to complete you can pay an additional $75.00 to expedite and this will get you a operators certificate to enable use of boat while the transfer is being completed .
Well got the boat in this afternoon ran pretty good a few odds and ends to straighten out left Meinke at 3 pm ran for about 4 hours just got back in with out calling forf tow boat . Since we're on the far west side of the lake any areas we can fish close to home until I'm a little more confident in her
MBLMike
Not sure how close you want to stay but the pear to the right (4 miles) and to the left, west/southwest of A-can (6-7 miles) have been producing. In front of Metzgers and Crane should be producing as well.
I’m at Meinke’s as well, D-82
I am At G33 just down from you , 270 Searay Amberjack has deck that goes between G32 and G33 with Picnic table and 2 Dock Boxes , other Boat in my well ( not in yet ) is my neighbor from home . stop and visit .
Coast Guard Documented Vessel I found out this "old boat" being an ex charter boat is a Coast Guard documented vessel so the transfer of ownership is a bit more complex than a usual title transfer and I wanted to pass this info along , after learning a valuable and costly lesson there is a web site that gives misleading information and has the appearance of being the US Coast Guard when you call them to have the boat transfer done you think your paying for the transfer but your actually paying for a service to have them do the transfer they are charging 3 to 4 times the cost to do this , unfortunately I did not realize this until I actually did contact the actual US Coast Guard today and they confirmed that this has been an ongoing problem they have been trying to stop for several years . Just an FYI
So got up to the the old boat Thursday found several inches of water in the bilge from all the rain I checked pumps not working and the hose was cracked on front pump so water would have just returned if it was running. The store at Meinke Marina had every thing that was needed ( and price checked them found they were cheaper than even the online suppliers) I replaced the hose , rear pump and rewired switch also got all the Navigation lights working so were ready to hit the Water Friday morning .
Went out to the pack of boats around crane creek stayed west of the pack a with a less than .4 mph drift casting purple hair jig tipped with whole crawler caught 4 walleye and couple of drum and several white perch . A really great day to be on the water .
Want to say thanks to all the help and advise this site shares Some thing I recently read here but did not fully understand was about trolling and staying out of a boats line its a whole different thing when your out with say a hundred boats stretched out over several miles navigating through drifters , trollers and anchored boats , yesterday the majority of people got it right
I must have missed you we were down there yesterday (Saturday ) fished 4 hours in front of intake , 20 walleye .
I fished Friday morning a real hot day but not a hot bite, managed 3 one a shorty sent back to grow a little, also caught a nice yellow perch and big channel cat and 1 drum fished north west of the Toledo water intake 23 foot of water stayed outside the pack of boats , casting green/ white Erie Dearies no wind but a nice hot and sunny day on the water. Upon my arrival at the my dock I was met by a State Watercraft Officer who did a check on my safety equipment and we got a thumbs up so all good , by the way this "officer was also a gentleman " after the inspection we chatted about fishing and got to know each other a little . I cant wait till next Friday to try again .
PS there appears to be nets on the south side of the intake FYI
I Live 10 Minutes from the marina , look for you each time I down there .your boat is very near mine .
I blew my Port Motor, boat is currently out ,sitting on trailer near the Store at the end of the road we are on.
New motor ordered , hope to get it in this week , just in time for the Mayfly hatch to slow and fishing to turn on again !
do you have a Camping trailer you stay in when here , you may be in town when I am at the marina but not see you at Boat
Capt give me a call when you get a chance 614 397 5834
Been out fishing on this old boat and having a great time we went out last Friday casting fished around the intake large pack of boats so we stayed on the outside drifting with erie dearies and weapons caught lots of shorts but managed 6 23 to 26 inch walleye 2 large yellow perch about 8 white perch and a couple of sheep head great fishing , biggest fish was caught when we came in to around 16 ft of water east of little cedar point
on the way in noticed a problem with starting and found my port exhaust Manifold has water getting into # 7 cylinder my motor is a 440 Chrysler its the log style manifold if any one has or knows where I can get a good used one let me know I found it new on line but a good used would be ok also .
Well like every one I'm thinking about fishing, I plan on being out on this old boat again if weather permits last Friday in Feb. Still need to replace some soft floor spots and finish some work left over from fall think I will install a 35hp outboard for trolling and a get home motor . Being a drifter and caster I'm going to try trolling a little this year so looking for a few trolling supplies any suggestions on rods, reels, planner boards and lures ?
Well like many of you I'm thinking of fishing it's only 7 Fridays until the first trip to the lake weather permitting, still Need to replace some soft spots in floor and finish a manifold on this old boat. I picked up a 35hp outboard to use as a trolling and a get home motor so will install that also. My being a diehard caster and drift fisherman the trolling will be a new venture any suggestions on gear rods, reels, planer boards, lures etc.?Attachment 7585
If I install center of Stern will rudder give any control or should I mount to starboard side and attach cable to rudder
