    Default Boat tachometers

My I/O needs a new tach so the son says, I looked at NAPA and they don't have any that top out at 6,000 rpm's but have ones that top out at 7,8,9, and 10,000 rpm's. Does anyone know if it makes a difference if I replace it with one that tops out higher than 6,000? Thank you for any help? Geary

Where the tach tops out makes no difference. The higher rpm tachs are just more pricey normally. As long as they are for the same # of cylinders ie 4,6, or 8 as your motor. Some are universal and have a switch to select the # of cyl

Check the Internet for same make that your boat has. Stick with a marine tack, they are made for a wet environment. Also check that wires are tight, and are not coroded.

West Marine- Bass Pro - Caballa all have them and are inexpensive, I have had to replace mine and several friends over the years.

Ok, back to square one. Took the tach to a guy in Delaware (close to home) he had some kind of meter and tested the tach and said it was fine. He also said that some electronic ign. wont talk to the tach unless you add something, condenser or something. Anyone know anything about this? I couldn't tell him the brand at the time but I now Know it Pertonics bought it at Lakeland down from the airport in PC. Any help???

Yes back to square 1. Have any other of your dash instruments stopped working? Use to be that one lead for tack was taken off of ignition coil. With new higher voltage ignition systems they may have different take off for tack lead. If same of your instruments have stopped woking, this very will could be a poor ground.
