I generally put 300' of usable line on my reels.

We fish the western basin over to vermillion and weather buoy. When we redid our spools this spring, as recommended by skipper9 we have at least 400 ft braid. We run okuma 30series. We have 100 ft 25lb backer, the at least 400 ft 30lbs power pro. We actually added pp till the real counter was actuate. Depending on how tight the backer was it varied between 400 to 500 ft. But we started with 400, and checked at 100 ft out a ND adjusted as needed.

I want to add these distances were from the line counter not a spooling station.

I followed Jims instructions and out of 10 reels it was never more than 5 ft off when checked at 100 ft out using his 1000 and 400 formula. Made adjusting the last few feet quick and easy.
