Hook 5x Reveal Fish Finder

Hi Folks:

I bought my dad a Hook 5x Reveal for his birthday, and we are getting ready to mount it and put it into service -- the boat is a 1974 Winner Cobra with the Merc 650 engine.


Im looking for any suggestions, tricks, tips etc that you have for the fishfinder -- particularly from those of you that have one or that have one in that series -- it has the split shot transducer with it. We dont do lake erie boating in that boat (TOO SMALL) so we are on Chippewa Lake, Portage lakes, and hoping to go do places like Berlin Lake, Meander Resivoir, West Branch, Mosquito Creek etc.


I know that this model does not accept charts or have any in it, but it does have a gps, and can log sonar. I am wondering if its possible to use the sonar to make a semi adequate bathymetric map of a lake (the one for chippewa lake is from the 1927 survey- almost 100 years old)


Im new to fish finders in general, so any and all input you can provide would be REALLY great
