Got 8 keepers and about a half dozen 13" walleye today. About 3 miles east of Kelly's near the line. Spoons took all the fish. Try trip 50's 70-75 back and 40's 90-95 back. Speed 2.5mph. 4 hours dock to dock.

Just spoons. Did you have dipseys on?
Ran worm harnesses for a while. Wasn't getting anything on them so I switched to all spoons. Wonderbread and Yagerbomb did well. It was me and the misses so I was running 4 lines all jet divers
Do you run boards on those?
Sometimes I run inline boards but I had everything straight back yesterday.
So just the spoons out 100 feet?
What does the TripAdvisor 50's and 40's mean. Just trying to get advice and pick people's brains. Dont want to make a 2 hour trip and not have a clue what I'm doing. At least this way I have some what of a idea
Trolling device to add depth.
Tru Trip Deep Diver 40 | Big Fish Tuff Tackle Co.
There's a dive chart that comes with the jets that shows how deep they will run with different amounts of line out. You want to run a few feet above the depth of the fish.
I was going to purchase the round divers. Is there a difference between the two. I found the settings and depth chart for them
The jets are similar to dipsies. Same concept. You need something to get your lures to the right depth.
I jusy noticed that people talk about the settings and line out. All of them come with the settings? And is it easier to run boards on those
How far do you set the dipsey above the spoon?
TruTrip divers run straight back and float when boat is not moving. Dipseys are weigthed and will sink when boat slows.
The dipsey can be set to dive directly behind boat or it can be adjusted to run off to the side to increase the spread of your rods.
They take some practice to set to avoid wrapping the release. Just release the dipsey under pressure sonit is always pulling. Do not let it oit fast, this creates undesired issues.
Tony it really sounds like should go out with someone that will teach you how to run the different gear. I predict you wont catch any fish & wont have much fun unless you like to untangle fishing line if you dont.
I've been out on charter boats every year for the last 20 years. I'm sure I have a lot to learn but wouldnt go as far as saying I wont catch fish. I'm asking questions so I have more of a idea of what I'm doing. Ive gone out on trolling and drifting trips in the western and trolling in the central. I dont know everything but have a pretty good idea of what's going on. Also I'm taking a couple guys that charter 3 or 4 times a year and have a little more knowledge than I do. But I appreciate the support
Great! Let us know how you do.
I appreciate all the great advice
It real easy to to run a 50 to or dipsey 0 setting on the corner and a dipsey 2 or 3 setting right in front of it on the corner then some board lines either little or big boards......
When setting the outside dipsey over an already running 50 jet or dipsey 0....i get the spoon or crank running with the dipsey just above the water inside the running line.........open bail but thumb the spool, just flip the outside dipsey over the running ling let out about 5-10ft.......thumb the spool for a few seconds to get the spoon or crank to move over the already running line............then slowly thumb the spool out or put the clicker on with some tension on the spooling out adjuster.........you don't want the clicker to sound like a tuna ripping it out. The only time this tangles on me is if the inside run fires during the flip or first few feet.....
I really appreciate the advice. I didnt buy any dipseys yet but might try them. Got jet diver and boards
I would buy 2 dipsey and run them with spoons initially.Use a 7ft leader and have rod holder tilted down so rod almost parallel with water.Braided line works best but mono works too.Ive run mono many times and do not run into problems.Buy a 8' snubber for your dipsey too. That will help with the dipsey not spin when you let it out slowly with the clicker on.
I will buy a couple dipseys. I have some 2 1/2 inch spoons I was going to try
I would get the size #1 dipsey with the rings in black color.Make two 7ft leaders.I make mine with 20lb test Seaguar fluorocarbon line with swivel on one end and clip on other.Swivel to dipsey clip to spoon. There are instructions and a depth chart in the dipsey you buy.We use stinger scorpion spoons, but most spoons will catch.Purple color has been working best lately and target 5-8ft off the bottom using that chart in package.I would start with a 3 setting. So on bottom of dipsey, loosen that screw and line that arrow up with R 3 and tighten up screw then on other go L 3.Keep that Phillips screwdriver in your pocket because the screw on the top of dipsey controls the tension to that metal arm. That tension has to be tight enough to keep that arm locked going the speed you are trolling...2.5mph now....and with boat rocking but light enough to unlock if a fish grabs your lure.I'm adjusting tension on mine all the time as conditions change or screw just moves on own.So the 3R setting goes on starboard and 3L goes to port.I like running mine in increments of 5 so the one side of boat is a 60 and the other side a 55.If get no bites move one up 5 to a 50 and the other down 5 to a 65.Keep moving one up and one down every 15min till starts catching. You also have to pull up every 15min to see if a short, junk or a keeper on the line.We have good fish on all the time that we can not see by action on rod tip.
Let dipsey out slow with clicker.I would definitely buy an 8' snubber to dipsey to help dipsey from rotating when putting out.If dipsey rotates the line will prevent lever from releasing and a fish could get away and you would have to bring in dipsey pulling hard.Try and keep rod parallel to water when sitting in rodholder. It helps with depth control and seeing fish bites.
I really appreciate all the help. What do you mean by 8' snubber? I
Its a rubber tube that is 8" long with a swivel on both ends.It acts like a shock absorber if a big fish like a steelhead hits it.You attach snubber to back of dipsey then leader on the snubber swivel. The spoon and leader have so little resistance that the dipsey can spin when letting line out.We used to have that problem till I put snubbers on my dipsey. The snubber has enough weight to pull that dipsey back and to keep from spinning. But keep that clicker on when letting out line anyway.
Itsbob are you a charter captain?
Lol,no Tony not a captain.Been fishing around the islands for past 40yrs.I know a few captains.Fish most every weekend during the season. No longer have a boat but have several friends who do have boats and go out with them.Good luck trying out new things trolling. That's how you learn.
Well I really appreciate all the advice. All I can do is try and learn. If I have any more questions I know where to go. Thanks again
Hey itsbob. When they talk about running the bandits 50/75 with a 2 ounce snap weight is that let out 50 feet of line then the snap weight and another 75 feet of line? I have yet to buy a dipsey but plan on getting one this weekend. When you say #1 is that the smallest dipsey they make? I know there are different sizes and weights. Any certain you would recommend. Thanks
Yes on 2oz weight on bandit at 50/75.Put out 50ft then weight then 75 more for total of 125.That is what people running in 45 fow ...feet of water..The #1 dipsey is the standard size and is the bigger one which is about 6" in diameter. When you buy it it says size 1 on package.
Yes you are correct about the snap weights. Dipsy divers come in four sizes:
000 is 3.25 inches and runs about 35 feet
001 is 4.125 inches and runs about 50 feet
003 is 4.875 inches and runs about 100 feet with o-ring
030 is 2.25 inches and runs about 20 feet
Now obviously they will run at different depths based on the line you let out. These figures are right from Luhr Jensen. Those depths are basically their optimum range. Each one comes with a dive curve in the package. I run the 4.125 inchers for trolling walleye. So basically you want to use the dipsy size for the depth your fishing so you don’t have to leave out a ton of line to get to your target depth. With the 4.125 inchers I have run as deep as 62 feet.
Thanks to both of you. Making it a lot clearer and helping a lot. New to this whole trolling. Normally just cast worm harness. Gonna try both. Was unthinking of heading out to the line when I come up in two weeks. Not sure if I need to run that far out or qhat. Been watching the reports and fishing sounds good out by the bouy
