Investigators want to figure out who is behind the death of 53 walleyes, whose fileted carcasses were found in a green Coleman cooler left along the side of the road in Muskegon County.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources posted details of the case Thursday on its Facebook page.
According to the agency, the cooler was found on April 8 near the corner of River Road and Holton-Duck Lake Road in Cedar Creek Township. The fish appeared to have been caught April 4-5.
According to the DNR, a licensed angler can legally capture five 15-inch walleye daily.
The case is at least the second big walleye caper the agency has handled in the last month.
In March, twin brothers from Kent County lost their fishing license and netted a hefty fine after pleading guilty to poaching 65 walleye from the Detroit River.
They pleaded guilty in 27th District Court in Wyandotte, and each man was ordered to pay $2,070, including $700 in reimbursement for fishing over the limit and $29 in conservation fees. Reimbursements are based on the weight of each individual fish, assessed at $10 a pound.
In addition, their fishing licenses were revoked for a year.
The agency is seeking tips on anyone who has recently come into a large amount of walleye, uses a plastic bag to line their fishing cooler or if you have any other information that may help identify the poacher(s).
Call or text the agency's poaching hotline at 1-800-292-7800. Tipsters can remain anonymous and could qualify for a reward if the information leads to an arrest or conviction.

Last year I saw a boat come in to Catabwa launch. Just seemed odd. Soon a van pulled up and they took a cooler out to the dock, soon unloading of a cooler from the boat took place. They knew I was watching them, but I have no authority to hit them up.. But I knew what they were doing.. Wisconsin plates on the Van. The boat took off heading back East for another load I'd say.. Bunch of crap..
Next time get license plates and numbers on boat. Give to dnr
The truly sad thing (besides thee obvious abuse of a privilege WE all cherish and respect) is that they havent lost ANYTHING! If anyone of us is shortsighted enough to think these idiots wont be right back out there again
youre kidding yourselves! They just saved them a licensing fee for next year.
Im an out of stater fishing Ohio Erie water and the Detroit River......Ohio hits me for another $11 this year.......no problem...... if I can't afford it I got no business making a trip to Lake Erie to go fishing. Id gladly give you another $5 to promote better enforcement coverage.
Just don't waste my $5 with a slap on the wrist for the offender please!
why is it not poaching when a charter lets there costumers use there license.i see pic of 5 people with 42 walleyes.im not defending anyone but this goes on every day year after year right in front of everyone.someone gets 50 walleye and everyone wants them put in prison,charter guys take thousands every year no says a word.
there is a difference when 2 guys take 75 just between the 2 of them or it 7 ppl take 42. The charter caught a legal number of per person on the boat. If i give my fish to them that's not illegal. i just cant go back out that day and get my fish again.
it's no different than if i give my fish to my grandpa, or a soup kitchen.
Kent,I bet that van called their friends on the boat and told them the DNR was not around and ok for them to drive in and drop fish off to them.When catching is fast and easy guys will double dip.The DNR knows this and watches the ramps.Heard they video tape boats and use drones to keep track of boats coming and going.I might have taken video with phone of those guys.But who knows what they may have done about it.
like I said im not defending anyone but there is no difference ,its not a boat limit its a person limit,are those charter captains reeling in their own fish?its wrong in both cases.just because they get paid to fish doesn't make it legal.its great for the customer.and I personally don't have a problem with it.but if anybody wants to hang people for poaching then hang all poachers.
Yes, The ODNR certainly has their hands full during this time of year. I am sure and hope- they have many many tricks up their sleeves. No reason for this kind of thing to happen, it is too easy to do things the right way, just rotten slobs. The one I saw was not a charter, but no matter. As far as I know the charter capt. can can catch their limit and give it away, but only one limit as for anyone else.
Captains be very careful with this, in WI they started putting wardens on boats to be sure the captains and mates were actually reeling in their own fish to give away. Some got busted for letting customers reel in their limit too. If they see somebody consistently doing it here you can bet there will be a sting operation on their boat.
The other thing they watch for is line count, if you get to the point where people start to get their limits you better pull their lines. If your fishing for just the captains limit at the end you better only have his legal amount of lines in the water.

Words straight from DNR mouth to me was you cannot give fish away at the ramp or dock. Once your home do what you want with them. Doesn't make much sense to me but that's what he told me. I too worked on a charter for years and we always gave our fish to the customer. Crap back then the captain's would tell us to catch catch catch to get the boat limit which there is no boat limit its individual limit.

I am confused as to why they say finding a cooler with 50 plus walleye is poaching. What if it was a group who fished 2-3 days and lost the cooler of the back of a truck- boat? Just seems like a lot of assumptions.

I thought there used to be possession limits listed on the Ohio fishing regulations. I don't see the possession limits listed anymore.

I would agree, if the fish are in releasable condition in a livewell. Throw them in a cooler as many boats do and that is no longer an option. At that point it's hard to say your fishing for something else with a full spread of "walleye" baits out.
I've watched some of the jigging boats have a caption or mate on the bow fishing. While the crew is "getting the hang of it" they are well on their way to/past their limit to help the customers fill theirs. It's a fairly common occurrence just not something enforced.
