After reading capt. Jules comments about the tadpoles I was considering getting a pair of the magnums to run like dipseys for the inside rods like I do dipseys. Does anyone else run the magnum like this or prefer dipseys for this scenario?

I know someone that runs them successfully over by Cleveland and east of Cleveland, but you shouldn't need anything over a #3 Tadpole on this end, due to the shallower depths.
Capt. Gary Zart of Blue Dolphin Fishing Charters runs the Magnums over there, so if you want more info on using them, he would be the one to talk to.
If you need his contact info you can PM me.
thanks Juls.
I will probably just go with the #3's.
In deeper water I dont see why the tadpole wouldnt work like Cleveland area. Unlike the dipsey that swings down and away from the boat (directional diver) the tadpole would just go below the boat while using it like a dipsey. Usually in shallow water the boat will scare fish away from the boat. Of course this is just my humble opinion. The tadpoles work good when they are away from the boat on a planner board line or small board.
Jim,
That was kind of my question. When in that 30-33' of water when some of those fish are low I was thinking of running a magnum tadpole down 28' with a harness or spoon directly below the boat because I don't see those fish run off the graph like I do the higher ones directly under the boat. I have downriggers, but never have had that great of luck with them, as it seems to spook those fish in my opinion. They do have positive ion control, so I don't know if they are feeling that wire coming through the water or cone of disturbance from the 16# ball but with the riggers down I do see they run off the graph. I know some people successfully fish eyes with them in the western basin, but I haven't had much luck.
Am I off here by thinking that those bigger marks down deep are post spawn females laying low?
The dive curve charts might help you decide which one you need...
I dont have much luck fishing below the boat in water less than 40 foot unless its really stained. If I was trying to catch fish on the bottom I prefer to run a 8 oz bottom bouncer off the corners of the boat. I open the reel and let it quickly hit the bottom then lock the reel. After the line is tight I let out another 5 to 10 foot and just let it drag. Normally I will pick up 2 to 3 fish on that one rod on a trip. Usually the biggest fish of the trip.
Capt Juls I know you are a pro staffer for offshore tackle and if anyone would know you would. But the tadpole is not a directional diver correct? So if you were running a load motor on a boat fishing a tadpole like a dipsy off one of the corners of the boat it would be directly below the boat correct? Expecially the magnum one with a quicker dive curve?
Thanks for all the advise. That definitely paints a much clearer picture for me on several fronts.
So.... tadpoles, jets, and true trips all do about the same thing?
Nice jab there Capt.
I may be sponsored by them, in fact I'm the director of the pro staff for Ohio, but that's because I love their products and use them with much success. I have been with them for over 13 years now, because it's a great company with people who have a passion for walleye fishing, and are always striving to create new and innovative products to help us catch more fish.
What's wrong with that?
Someone asked for information on a product that I use and know a little something about. Does my sponsorship affiliation make my information less valuable? I don't see how it does. My information is truthful, because lies are too hard to keep track of.
In all fairness I think Skipper9 was just saying he prefers the 40 TT's and not being sponsored by BigFishTuff (40 tru trips) just so others didn't think he was steering them towards a product for personal reasons. Just my .02 cents.:)
Maybe, but that he brought up the fact that I was a pro staffer suggested to me that he thought I was "pushing" a product simply for that reason.
Why point that out otherwise?
Don't put all pro staffers in the same bucket. Some bad apples give all of us a bad image...I know.....sigh.
By the way, I have Tru-Trips on the boat too. :)
when it comes to tad poles I think the guys who fish inline weights switch to tad poles when the lake is choppy I heard that inlines when its choppy move up and down quite a bit and the tab poles reduce's the sway. I would run a dipsey any day of the week over a tab off of the corner of the boat. I only use them when in about 25 fow or deeper. The dipsey diver is an awesome weapon.
I use tadpoles behind inlines as well and tru trips / dipseys off the back. Also, I don't think skipper meant anything by the pro staff callout, seemed more like a call for your expertise on the matter due to your affiliation and his brand neutrality. I do read and appreciate your detailed fishing reports, thanks for taking the time to write them; both Juls and Skipper.
Capt Juls, I was pointing put you were an expert on off shore equipment. I was only pointing out that I am not an expert on any equipment and dd not endorse or am sposored by any equipment manufacturers. I said dipsys work but I use the walker 107 mm. Myself. So please give your opinion and I will give my humble opinion and neither of use should take it personal. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.. good luck to ecery one on the water my friends
So sorry...I misunderstood.
By the way, I always read your posts, because I can learn from you too. I'm no expert either, just another goof that likes to chase walleye around a big lake and pretend I'm smarter than their tiny little pea sized brain, and from time to time be very humbled by their chess match like out maneuvering. :)
I personally prefer the true trips because Bigfishtuff is a local company and Dan stands behind the product and will always pick up the phone to gladly answer a question. The tadpoles are a great product and work well but as already stated there is no comparison between a dipsey and a tadpole because they serve 2 entirely separate purposes.
I like the fact that the tru trips float until you lock the reel.... also comes in real handy if you happen to snag a reef and need to shut down to free the snap, lures floating beats the heck out of dragging the bottom. Jmho
if you are running in line planners and bottom bouncers, run some #1 tads on your outside lines, early season hogs are usually feeding on the top 10 ft column of water, so if you were running 20# mono with a 4ft lead/ worm harness attached to the tad, go back roughly 30ft on your release and target those biggies, should get you in that 8-10ft column mind you I'm trolling 1.2-1.5 mph early season and fishing reef type areas.Fluctuate your speeds to entice them to hit. Just my 2 cents worth.... good luck.:)
As a wise old man once told me, use whatever the boats your fishing with are using. If the people you talk to on the phone and the radio out there mostly use tadpoles on 20# mono, well you better have tadpoles with 20# mono in order to match their programs when they find the fish and you don't. 30# braid and 40 and 50 jets are not going to help you in that situation and vice versa.
For a lot of the programs around the islands and vermillion that you hear about on channel 79 you pretty much hear the same setups. 30# braid, 40 tru tip jets, dipseys, inline weights and a mix of 50 tru tips and regular jets depending on the boat. I hear more of the tadpoles talked bout on the message-boards after the fact, not sure if they talk on a different channel then I listen or if I just miss the reports. If more reports where given with them on the lake, people would be more inclined to purchase and use them.
It is amazing how quickly on a slow day that someone can mention they are getting fish on a Skinned Squirrel reef runner, 2 oz inline etc that by the time I get in, clean the boat and head to the tackle store to get a few for the next trip that the tackle shops are magically out of all of that gear.
Oh and on the originally topic of this thread, as others have mentioned, there really is not a replacement for dipseys. Even though I am not a big fan of those stubborn things you still got to use them, I just feel bad for that white bass I just drug for 3 miles before checking the dipsey.
I find that the larger charter boats, like Pooh and Budman, are usually running the TT's Jets with spoons, while us smaller charters are using the Tadpoles and spinners.
If you were out last weekend, you would have heard the word Tadpoles a lot on the radio (79) north side of Kelly's. Gary Zart was reporting all day long, both Saturday and Sunday, on what distance back and what color blades were working best to catch fish, and I was too, along with another boat Gary was working with. Gary was also running dipsies off his corners on the 3 setting at 35 back, but they weren't doing as well as the Tads off the boards last weekend though.
When we're catching we're reporting to help others who might be struggling. We don't talk in code like some other boats do. Those guys crack me up. ;)
That explains it on last weekend, I was on call from work so could not go out on the water so it was a weekend off for me. I guess I need to pay more attention especially in the next month or so when we are running closer in to the islands. I saw Gary's reports on OGF a couple weeks ago and looked at a few videos of them on youtube. If I was running inline boards that is definitely a route I would be looking into over Jets.
I guess those big charter boats are who I am normally listening for on the radio, I know I am not really known for a lot of radio chatter myself unless someone asks how or what I am doing.
This past week fishing the "Islands" area we did quite well with our corner rods running 3oz. BB but we couldn't get them to go until we brought them up to 40 back instead of on the bottom. The bulk of the fish we marked were between 18-25' ft down. We always try 2 rods off the corners along with with the 4 boards. I waited to get my Tadpoles but haven't got to use them yet  Next trip though.
I fish around the islands and am wondering what is the most common or the best size dipsey to use?
Get the large dipseys. Either Walker or L Jensen. We use L Jens and some use the Walkers. Nothing wrong with each, just go by the the chart for depths. The other thing is if you are running Walkers and ask me how deep I am catching them on, you have to convert the numbers. For instance, Captain of the year for 2014 Dr. Bugs was trolling right beside me late last summer and saw him pulling fish on his dispeys. I was taking some fish on my jets ( reg 40s ) as he was also. So I called him and asked what his setting was. He uses Walkers, he said check your chart and for that depth as with using the outer ring and I dont run it with a ring. Thats the diff between the two disks. Bang, right on but that was shallow water so we probably were getting the spook effect. I like diseys and they are so easy to use, add a snubber and 6 ft leader. I use all sort of lures on them to see what works like all the other parts of the chess game.
Jets ruled this weekend on short settings with small spoons in bright fruity colors. #1 setting on my dipseys at 21 with a #12 husky jerk took fish.
Thanks Greg. Very helpful.
