cure let jigginitis and cabin fever my friend. i might have to make an audible myself.
Soo jiginitis, do you think the ice will survive the thaw this weekend and early next week. Kinda wondering if this would be my only chance to get out this year before everything melts. lol
Got to watch out for pressure cracks. Might be inch wide going out but coming in maybe 4 foot wide or wider. Be safe and careful guys.
This from another site! I am posting this from another site as I don't want anyone getting wet or worse. As always use your own judgment. Be careful and have fun!!!

I saw that....I heard 9-10" all the way to green too. Reports don't add up. This weather didnt ruin 9-10" of ice........now they say a quads tire broke through, and an airboat busted through on the main trail. Why would an air boat, that can travel anywhere, be on a trail used by walkers, sleds, quads etc........think I'll wait for more cold!
I know this I would trust the post from the other site. He is a creditable guy and gives good info.
Posted the above info from my phone before I was ready!
I in no way meant to discredit what was posted earlier by members of this site! I am sure they posted good information and would not intentionally post bogus info that was suspect. or info that could get anyone in harms way. I am not an Ice Fisherman and know very little about it. But I do care about the safety of all the fishermen that utilize this site for information. That is the only reason I posted the link about the ice condition in the first place.
Just got back from Cataba. Lots of water on ice and the people i talked to said no fish today. I think i will wait until it freezes over again. Does not look safe to me with this warm spell.
Went out this am. Ice is good with some interesting spots. Seen quite a few weep holes but ice is 7" & only 1" is white crap ice in hole. Current was very strong today. Marcum LCD-5 had a difficult time marking lure. Swinging down current. Line got broke. Lost another, but friend got his 28 1/4" whopper on a chrome & blue salmo. We were 1.2 miles out of Catawba in direct line with Green Island. Slow day overall. Think we will have a great season. Long range forecast is to maintain existing ice and after 1/15/14 to build an additional 2-3"
Thanks for detailed report. Nice to know distance, direction, conditions etc....I looked on a weather channel page and they were calling for above normal temps for next 10-14 days....according to jet stream. Hope that is wrong and Canada opens door and let's another one of those arctic blasts down. (For about a week with no wind!!). Not asking for much! I hope basin hangs in until temps back down....a lot of flowing water right now!
idk HOPPY, i watched the weather channel today and from what i saw, starting tuesday, temps will be back to normal to below normal for the next few weeks in the great lakes region. Highs averaging in the 20's and lows in the teens. Not really cold like last week but cold enough i think. lets hope so :)
Heres the report that came into me as of monday moring, good catches of walleyes off crane creek 1 to 2 miles out, report of some walleyes eater size inside of water intake, we fished bolles habor sunday, lots of guys 9 to 10 inches of ice, sat fishing was very good in afternoon, sunday slow till afternoon, bluegills and perch, hint, you must use one or 2 lb test line and extreme small jigs, mousie and wax worms, The Reel sport team.
The afternoons produced better off Catawba also
Do you think crane creek and a 4 wheeler will work? Any ice thickness report off there.
Saterday lets get a group togeather to venture out and see.. Safty in #'s and bring a rope...
I'm in. Already have rope. Also Mustang Model MSD 901 immersion suit
So whats the chances Catawba SP area will be fishable this coming weekend? Wednesday, Thursday, Friday appear to be colder, so i got my fingers crossed. I can hardly beleive ppl went out today with temps bein near 50 degrees. Thats nuts lol
Saturday/Sunday should be fine. Fish are close in now. I would walk during week. I have no plans till Friday to venture. Lots of current with melt off. It's still early & I prefer to be safe. I test the ice every 1/4 mile & know to stay away from shoreline (Big current along cliff). Go west 500 yards before heading north & stay away from Airboat tracks.
Thanks all for the updates, are they going out of Anchor Point/ Metzgar's Marsh to area inside intake? I fished there many years ago .
We have a group of 10 are heading for lake Simcoe North of Toronto first thing Thursday morning for Lakers, White Fish and Big Perch be back Sunday night , will let all know how we do , it is a yearly trip fishing is great if you have never been there try it !
We have 2 openings if anybody wants to go , we would need to meet first to discuss , you would need a passport , we rent the same house every year in Perfallaw Ontario
Hope to Fish Catawba Next week.
I have been unable to get an up to date satellite image of Lake Erie the last couple of days. Has anyone else had this problem?
Here is the last one from today!

Here is the link to all of the Pics. hopefully one or the other will work for you.

yeah, that satellite image is very neat to look at. Looks like the western basin is somewhat locked in. Soo, with the thaw bein over now, what would you guys say the average ice thickness is north and west of catawba a mile or 2. Did it melt down to 2 or 3 inches or are we still at 6-8 inches? I would like to head up this weekend
Was there this evening. 1 snowmobile, 3 Quads, & a Polaris Razor. Off point were current starts to run shoreline north. 2 1/2". Oh my! Head west. That was close. We went out to 20ft due west & found 7" & 8" ice. Thank goodness cold weather is moving back in. Warm weather & snow melt has taken its toll, but it's still there & will be safe by Saturday. I think with weather forecast in 10-12 days it will be "Run at will". Till then? Travel in packs, go slow, & check often. Shoves are starting to invert & we are expecting wind next 2 days. See ya Saturday. I have this & that to do's to get ready. Think it will be shanty season for a while. Have not used mine yet.
Alrighty, thanks for the info man. So whats the best lures to use. Sweedish pimples tipped with a mini with a pop and drop motion? Im pumped and ready to go. Could end up bein a banner year. Just looked at Channel 10 Columbus meteorologist Chris Bradleys facebook page and he posted a graphic showing extended cold from now all the way through early February. Thats what we wanna hear.
Everyone is using something different. Bring all your lures. No single lure has dominated yet. I've caught them on PK, Jigging Rapala, seen Puppet Minnows, Salmo, pimples, etc. everyday is different. Colors vary too. Good Luck & Good Fishing
Took a ride up to check my boat this morning. Decided while I was close to Catawba that I would swing around that way and see what was happening.
There were 2 trucks in the parking lot but no one was visible on land or on the ice. The one truck had a flat bed tilt trailer that was still tilted up indicating that that person had brought some form of transportation for on the lake. There was also a cargo trailer there.
Next I went up to the ferry dock and could visibly see 5 ice fishing shelters on the lake. They ranged from fairly close to Mouse and ran on an angle toward Green all 5 shelters were each separated by a considerable distance! The one farthest out was probably 1/3 to 1/2 way to Green.
I know it is not much, but me not being an ice man it is the best that I can do for you diehard ice guys! I am by no means claiming it is safe but only passing on my observations. So if you decide to go please use your own good judgment and experience, be careful first and then have a good time!!
Thanks wakina! Wasn't sure if the govt only gave you so many looks or something. I don't even think about the islands without a satellite image and weather report. Hoping to get out this weekend. Hopefully this cold spell came early enough in the week to get out this weekend.
I don't know if you guys have seen this yet or heard about it so I am again posting a link to a thread from another site. If this turns out to be a fact I would not feel good about myself if I did not at least warn you. Please all of you Ice Fishermen click on the link and check it out. The information in it could save you a big PIA or even your life and gear.

Like I said before I am not an Ice Man but I can still forward important information to those who are!! I don't want to see anyone hurt or suffer any type of a loss if it is preventable.
Here we go! Again? Deja Vue 2009-02-11. Call the Sheriff! What cutter. No cutter! Oh? You have photos? Oh? Well? We had a recruiting in Cleveland on Monday. If the come from Cleveland & stay east? All should be fine, but if the come from Detroit? Big Problems. Hope the USCG has as much or more common sense then brains.
jiginitis69, How are they going to get that barge to SBI without destroying the Ice that you guys rely on? They almost have to come in from the West to have enough water to float not only the barge but the tow/push vessel as well as the Ice Breaker.
Easy question. Is it deeper water east or west of Millers? I tink east. As long as they don't go straight from west sister to south of Green Island all would be fine. Lots of good fishing NW of Carawba. Why don't they go north of Kelley's & south to millers then to SBI. And go back the way you came. Don't know project & timing so don't want to refer project couldn't be completed in spring. Just an industry killer decision.
Soo Jiginitis, we've all been talking about the ice conditions, now lets tallk about the fishing. You say "good fishing" NW of Catawba huh. I mean, good as in the average joe is picking up at least a fish or two or good as in you talked to 1 professional ice fisherman that caught his limit on an entire days fishing? lol big difference. lol im not really that experienced at this. I'll probably just walk out about a mile, drill a couple holes and flutter that pimple up and down and hope for a dumb one. So i mean, how far out would you say id have to go to at least have a chance at picking up a couple? Is a quarter to half mile west of catawba just wasting my time or is it really worth it to go northwest a mile or two? thanks for the info man
Go forth. 2 miles puts ya in the fish. Fisherman are friendly. Many a time I go alone in good ice conditions & I will pick up a walker and take him fishing with me. Not a problem. Wave a $20 bill and watch what happens. You'll get a ride and make a friend. There are 100's of thousands of fish. We're not hunting that elusive big buck solo. Of course there are fellas that think they special & don't want to share that secret spot. I say "Ha"! Fish move. Some areas have better tendacies but that's all there worth. No man worth his salt picks up a fellow fisherman and abandons him. It's a adventure. Hop on.
Youlam on fishing this weekend? I would like to go out but I lack a lot of equipment I would need...d if you would, like to helpful and give, me a idea of what to do that would be great... Fished one time anoutm2 miles outmandmhad sled problems....take me on ice I will show you a great, fishing in my boat...let me knows. Lowe life
Lowe, I'll pm ya. Next week Crane Creek will be on. I have a Aquasport CC with 200 Johnson. Had it since 87'. Do pretty good jigging too. I trailer it. Offers flexibility. Bay is good condition or head to fenwick. Watch ur PM. You don't need anything but good clothes and creepers on your boats. I run a Honda Rubicon 500 4x4
I found this on another site! Its actually going to happen!
http://coastguardnews.com/ice-breaki...ie/2014/01/17/
Was a mile and a half north of Catawba today. About 7" where we set up. Miller's dock was loaded up for their delivery tomorrow. Was brutal out there today!
According to the Miller Ferry Facebook page, the ice breaking scheduled for tomorrow is canceled....
