Catawba state park to put-in-bay yet?:d
Ok so i live over an hour away from the lake so i count on everybody on here to keep us up to date. So, are these few days of record setting cold gonna do much for making ice, or is the 30mph + winds gonna prevent the lake from freezing up??? I mean, is the western basin pretty much locked up or not really? I usually try to go out of Catawba so whats it like within a mile of shore there? You dont have to get out very far to catch walleyes. Any info would be great. Thanks guys

Thats what i would like to know. Is there decent ice within a mile west of Catawba State Park? Thanks
Well from Pics I have seen on Facebook the lake is Frozen over to the Islands just don't know how thick it is! I'm waiting for answers so I will report back if I get them! -Dave
After tonight. Look at the modis great lakes images. A few cracks remain.
At 10 knots or less the wind will help. Should be locked up by the morning. Be safe. Wind in excess of 10 knots, beware.

Ok, so i dont know that much about how the weather really affects the ice conditions. But we got somewhat of a mini thaw Friday through Monday. Is that gonna kill the ice and our season or should she survive it? I hope we have a great season, but its gotta stay cold
That's the question. With sub zero temps & wind chills to -40 it's been too dangerous to scout. High 20 tomorrow, I plan on scouting Crane Creek, Camp Perry & Catawba SP Thursday. Let ya know what I find. Another question is will it be machine ready? Rain forecasted for Saturday & there's a lot if snow on ice it will slush up and render a ATV next to useless. Till Thursday. Ok I have heard or read alot of talk but nothing of any use. Is the lake fishable right now and where at. I have a few days off this week and would love to come up to fish. Three hour drive so I need good info. Thanks it's getting my blood churning thinking I might gets some ice fishing in.:)
yeah, nobody seems to know the answer to the million dollar question. Is there people fishing off catawba and about how much ice? I wont go unless theres a good 5 or 6 inches.
don't know about Catawba!! but they are fishing Saginaw bay out of Linwood
Finally, I can post! A week ago Sunday ice was around Catawba and area but with that warm weather and heavy rain it was all broke up and moving. We had no real cold weather until this last blast so no one I have heard has been scouting. Western basin looks ice covered and 35 mph winds didn't blow it out, I imagine guys will start poking around. I would not even think of blindly trying to make trip from Catawba to islands yet. Let those more experienced and with the time check things out, and then wait until you get several good, consistent reports. Good fishing won't start until late Jan....to early Feb...anyway, as a rule. Be safe

Last year it was crazy to be out there period. Ice never got good on sag bay, just as it did not get good on Erie. Guys still went out, and seemed like somebody got wet about every day. Sounds like ice is good up there this year, and on river too. As for fish....they get a lot of small ones......but might catch 30-40-50 in a day. Fishing might be better than "wishing"! LolQuote:

I'd say if they are gonna drive semi's across the ice to put in bay your snowmobile will make it
Half Pole.... I haven't heard about semis running on the ice.. when is this supposed to be done? I got word on sunday that there were guys that went in on the west side of south bass... I believe they were in a Polaris UTV. everyone that I know of was ok... but I agree if they are going to be able to drive loaded semis over I would think a sled would be good.

Lowe Life was the first person to ride to the harbor light! That's me and my yamaha I made the first trip alone its a once in a lifetime ride.. I can say I did it and did it first! Great ride no major ice jams or cracks.. Rode from Point Place. If you plan on riding out their please be careful. Truly a awesome experience!
