All I can say is what a season for Walleye we never came back to the dock once without fish. Now I have a new problem my fishing partners fully expect to come back with limits all the time. This sure does add some pressure looking toward 2013. A very special thanks to my friend Jim for teaching me the trade.

Yeah I second that whole statement. The only time I came in with none was yesterday lol...we went out for a few hours after I moved the boat to Huron. Jim better quit showing people how to fish or we'll clean the whole lake out lol. Nice to have met you on the water Kevin...

The good news about a great walleye season is a rookie like me was able to catch good fish rather easily. The bad thing is its bound to get harder. And if it gets difficult Jim will get tired of me bugging him. lol

i dont know you myself, but your my kind of guy. i would just like to say its good of you to help so many people learn how to catch fish. i,ve been fishing erie for about 30 yrs now and still dont know alot. but i have learned so much from reading good posts on fishing forums, and the few charters i have taken out.
i didnt know anything about fishing the central basin, and even less about using dipsy divers. i made a couple of trips out on a charter, and he taught me enough to get started. we do pretty good but could do alot better. this year we went out on another charter. it was money well spent, as the first couple of trips i spent as much time as i could just learning dipsy divers. this trip i got to spend more time talking to the capt and learning more about the catching part and i learned alot. we went up to geneva for 2 weeks and went out on the charter the first day. that really helped us catch more fish the whole trip.
i dont use dipsy,s anymore, i switched to the walker deeper divers, then a couple of yrs ago i switched to the lite bite slide diver. i dont use the slide part of the diver, i just use it like a standard diver. but the lite bite trigger has been a great tool for us. we use to bring our divers in to check them and rebait, just to find a small fish hooked up. now with the lite bite trigger they will usely trip from even a small white perch. this makes diver fishing much more fun.
so kudo,s to you and guys like you that are willing to share there knowledge with guys like me. catching more fish is always better than having a big skunk in the box.
if things go as planned next year when we go to geneva were going to charter out the first or second day of our trip and see if i can learn from another captain. where are you usely fishing the first couple of weeks of july??

gregnwtf is dead ON, with what he is saying... and no this is not a paid advertisement... :) I reached out to him because I am new to the lake with a bigger boat and I called him up and he provided a wealth of information. Additionally, he helped me locate some fish when I hadn't been to the lake for a while. And I agree with helping each other out, but also finding your own style. Even if you don't catch fish, but you learn something about the lake, or yourself, it is a great reward in itself. I have chatted with a few of these guys and have yet to meet them. They are straight shooters and very helpful. I just wanted to chime in and say THANK YOU for all that the captains have done, both on the off the water. GOD Bless them.. and God Bless America...
hey guys! thanks for all the great responses. i didnt have problems catching fish when i was on them. it was my first year of trolling and seemed to figure it out a bit. the only time i caught lots of fish all year was when they were west of green. someone recommended to read up on the lake. i think ill do that. i dock in east harbor. i know skipper was heading north of vermillion. im curious on how far that is. and maybe it is necessary to go that far. like i said just starting out and learning. love the info tho guys. and very willing to learn! thanks! In the spring, I dont have to travel more than a few miles at most in early April. I fished April 1st this year, started in 9ft of water 1/2 mile out. Never had to go more than 16 miles. Most days I ran 12 miles and stayed there all day. Skipper9 made alot of runs over 18 miles most days. Not saying thats wrong but thats where he found his fish. Skipper9 likes to run east of his harbor to areas of the lake I fished 15-20 yr ago. Everybody has their own way they want to fish. I fish the west end most of the year and from mid July till Labor day I offer Ashtabula trips but this year I took plenty of fish NE 12 miles of Fenwick Marina.
Next year it will probably be different locations. I may have to run to Maumee Bay area in the spring for jigging. I learned that I love to fish Canadian waters. Its an entirely new way to fish, for the most part. Its alot more reef fishing, which can be tricky but rewarding when pulling fish out of the shallows. Anyways, you can see there are alot of factors to think about each day when you head out. Mayflies bring on another new story for another day.
I can catch fish closer to land but I choose to go out away from all the boat traffic and catch bigger fish faster than I would be able to closer to shore. Its a personal choice...Quote:
