I like night fishing. If the weather is decent, I am sure that I will be out during the midnight hours of the opener....
I plan on doing some of the nite thing but maybe not the opener. I always said why fish at nite when we can get them in the day. My buddie loves the nite fishing, thats what he does most.
Night bite might be off this season. At least where everyone trolls. Fish will be deeper. A few males might still be lurking in the shallows but I don't think it's gonna be everyone limits out bite. Gotta figure the water temp we have now is basically a month ahead of schedule. The spawn on Oneida and some other smaller lakes is well over with. What will be nice is those big slob females will be rested up and hungry. If there's bait on Seneca shoal, you can be sure it's gonna have eyes on it. Otherwise I'd look at the slag piles off the windmills. Emerging weedbeds. Or other places that hold bait. A jig and minnow is a great bait for weedbeds. Or it could be off bite from post spawn. Water temp is 45 at water intake. Gotta figure it's warmer in the shallows.
I love the night bite. It can really put you captain skills to the test. If the weather is right I will put in at hamburg and make a few passes.
i will be going out fri or sat see how the weather is im going to try deeper this year maybe around the senca shoul bouy in 16 fow
we have been killing fish at nite on the western basin im sure its a little diffrent for u guys always been curious about fishing in the deep water weve been catching nice jacks at nite with smith wick roges if i can be of any help let me know good luck boys.
Copo, our season in still closed, it opens the first Saturday in May if Ny does anything smart is is closing our season from 3/15-the first Saturday in may. I wish all of the Lk. Erie states and provences closed the season during the spawn. Ok enough ranting, our temp. is 46° taken 30' down at the Buffalo water intake. Our day bite will start in late May or early June. Here is a link to our water temp reading. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/buf/laketemps/laketemps.php
I know and understand that. I've often wondered why all of lake Erie isn't closed to the spawn myself. Especially when a majoreity of the spawn takes pkace in the western half. My point of asking was know how for through the spawn they are compared to us. The water is not usually this warm already. Making me think the fish will be well into postspawn and moved deeper here by next week is all. We all know that fish spawn according to water temp. (Walleye between 40til 45) not by the month or day. I'm not trying to argue in any way, just gathering as much info as I can.
I think this cold snap for sure has slowed things down a bit but warmer temps on the way i will be out second weekend if all goes well. I have an appointment with TOM opening weekend in the mountains at camp. After that its time for eyes but i may give the local river a few casts next sat night. I think this Sunday i may try to tangle with the kings one more time also. Those of you who regularly fish night bite does ot get better as night goes on or at dusk on erie. I usually wait for day bite but got the itch to try something new on erie.
The water temp is 48 degrees were running smith wick rogues 35 to 38 back on in line boards speed 1.4.1.6 depth on rogues are about two feet in water running minkota 101 pd thrust boards are very wide from boat.
one thing i have always noticed is when the jig bite comes to the end u still have a good three weeks to catch fish at nite. not saying u cant catch fish later in the year at nite. we always start with rogues then go to husky jerks and then finish with 700 series reef runners. all our fish are coming form water from 7 to 10 ft of water good luck boys any thing i can do to help just ask.
we have had some of our best nights when water temp is in the mid 50s!!!The males are in there for the bait.
Hi all,
Yes I wish the whole lake would let them spawn, sure seems like a good idea to increase the population. Maybe western basin has so many walleyes it doesn't matter ?
Also, have you guys seen the proposed fishing regulations of increasing walleyes to 6 per day now in NY state?
the night bite is to die for - flat lining diving stick baits is the ticket
Yes that will go thru starting oct 1st 2012, the rest of the lake is 6. the dec is doing this to bring us up to par with ontario,pa,ohio, and mich.
testing, my replt didn't post yesterday
Fishkiller , I was told the 6 fish limit starts on opening day. Is that not true ?? Thanks
It is ABSOLUTLY NOT TRUE the DEC just started the comment period on the limit change. If it gets passed (and it should) it will start on October 1st 2012 at the begining of the new license year. That was one of the things they talked about at The State Of The Lake Meeting last month.
my first rpt. here on this site - i was out on sat. night from 9 pm - 3 pm, lots of boats (needed a traffic light), i was able to land 2. question is it polite to pull board within a pack of boats? - seems crazy to me and looks like more work than its worth (my 2-cents).
fish-on "rippin lips"
Just my 2 cents but boards are a pain in a pack of boats & at night it would seem a real big pain I would think hard to see . jmo.
I am hoping to run boards even if only 25ft off sides with glow sticks on them i wouldnt want to try long lining them that could cause a mess.
Board lines are not required when fishing at nite. It is a pain for the person running the boards and for the boats that are working the same water . they are hard to see. I dont care what you do to them to make them easier to see.
IMO boards are fine to use, when used with a little common sense.
Super heavy boat traffic in-tight, then leave them in the boat. Sparse to moderate traffic, go ahead use them a reasonable distance from the boat and with adequate lighting.
In general, when using boards be more defensive to avoid potential run-ins, and if possible stay just outside the pack edge (has a added benefit :) ).
A bigger problem than pulling boards at night is when everyone is trolling in different directions vs. an orderly set of trolling lines.
Just got word from a reliable source fishing is good at night down out of dunkirk to the west in front of lake erie state park. 7 fow. Good numbers if any of you want to make the run.
The fishing off of hamburg is good right now. Caught 5, the biggest was a 25.5" male. Black and silver floating rapalas in 6 FOW.
Well its coming our way mybe buffalo will be on for the weekend the temps are coming around for the bite to turn on at night.
I was out sat night. Those couple guys pulling inline boards with glowsticks on them were making more work for themselves. Way to many boats and first timers out there sat. They barely had the boards 15ft off the boat. Rods out the side would have been just as effective.
Shorthanded, agreed 100%, right on the money about the night boards. We were out last night, pretty rough & we didn't get not 1 hit off the windmills. My buddie had 2 by 11:30 when we quit, he stayed don't know how he ended up.
At least some people are getting some fish. That's promising. Bailey how did you hear about Dunkirk? That's a long way from home for you.
anyone try Seneca or Myers yet?
All ill say is its good info ha ha. Hoping this weekend livens up on our end ill be out trying my luck.
My buddy went out last night and limited out with 2 people. Drifting white head jig and a worm. 8-15fow in front of windmills
Nice to hear copo things are looking up.
shorthanded i tried senaca on sat nite (12 to 18fow) mark fish no takers it was rough out there came in closer and nothing
thanks Milt. we fished a few hours sunday evening marked a LOT of bait and fish in 15 for in front of the windmills. no takers. hopefully out again this weekend.
I was by the 2 guys drifting & saw there lights come on once in a while, I figured they were getting some, good for them. Did better then us! Maybe our turn next time. My buddie ended up with 4 & lost 3 others, he quit at 12:30.
copo i saw that guy, he was very clumsy and almost ran into a few boats trying to get away - hey its tough enough flat lining with all the boats but boards - you've got to be kidding and at night its even more difficult. if your going to do it - do it away from the pack
fish on aka rippin lips
