Smallmouth the ghost fish

Went to Vermillion today and not a damn bite!!!!!!!:mad: Cranberry creek to the castle to the vermillion river. 10 to 20ft of water, was out at sun rise, which was beautiful! until 3. 20yrs ago you could catch smallmouth all day! I saw a guy today catch one and put it in his box!:mad: This is why the smallmouth population is way down because of people like this! Throw the damn thing back! i know alot of fishermen keep their catch but cmon! Im proud to say i am a catch and release kind of fisherman. My girlfriend caught a 35 inch 12lb walleye last memorial day weekend around kelleyes. I made her throw it back as she wanted to keep it. Its there to catch another day. I dont mind at all that fisherman keep their catch and eat it, but when fish that use to be a force in the water and is now hard to find, PLEASE just throw it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I happen to like the way fish taste. If its legal then keep it if you wanna eat it. First 35" walleye that hits the deck of my boat is going on the wall. To each his own.

My thoughts exactly!

Each person has to make their own decision about keeping or releasing their legally caught fish.

I also fish for the small mouth and i keep some and release some. That is why i fish the enjoyment of catching and later the enjoyment of eating them if i choose to do so. If the population was that bad i think they would change the bag limit. i personally have not had a problem finding smallies when i have been up there.

We need stricter regulations on commercial fishing .. they have a bigger impact on fish population than the sportsman

You were the first crybaby to post....I can't catch any smallmouth cause you guys keep them all wahhh wahhh wahhh. Better put on your big boy panties when you start pointing fingers.:D

If you were my boyfriend, I would have kept the walleye and threw you back! That is why I fish, to catch the trophy fish or eat them! My husband and I love to catch perch or walleye and get enough in our freezer to eat through the winter and the cost of fish isn't cheap! :p

Hey whiner.....maybe if you put as much effort into improving your fishing skills as you do your crying skills you could boat more Smallies. I personally have got it down to where I consistantly catch good fish. I have landed 4 Fish Ohio Smallmouths this summer - and took them home and ate them!

Some people will do anything for attention.

I have always been able to catch them (Smallmouth) when I target them, caught some this year while targeting walleyes. Tournament fishing is what harms the smallmouth population, they take the fish from their home habitat and then turn them loose in whatever port the weigh in is located (smallmouths are very home bound fish and are not nomadic like walleyes and perch are.). Next time there is a tournament check the area of the weigh-in or release area and see how many smallies are floating belly up in the next couple of days after the tournament. Please note that I am not advocating that tournament fishing be stopped or even limited just adding what I have observed with my own eyes.
Same thing with walleye fishing I managed to catch 120+ eyes this year in just 24 or 25 trips some were caught in July and August and all were caught in the western Basin west of the Islands. Like I have said before keep a log and record every day that you fish good or bad and then you will soon know where to start and about how deep according to the weather conditions and time of day, year ect. and your catch rate will be drastically improved over a period of time.
