anyone catchin walleye around kellys or over by starve island? would love to know. im goin up this weekend to fish.
I went up last Friday and talked to a guy that was checking in his 13lb walleye at the bait shop. He limited out slow trolling 2 oz inline weights with pink worm harnesses and antifreeze color just north of Kelly's (35-42 fow). 1.0 mph, 65ft back... Saw all his fish and they were all big. Report back and let me know how you do. I won't make it back up until May 14th but plan to fish this same area...
ill let you know if i can get out. the weather isnt looking too good for the weekend
jkr,
That is good to know around Kellys. I dock at Gem Beach and went NW of Green on last Sat. and caught an 8 lb. er...early and about noon went to David Bessie and caught sheep head and white bass. Lot of boats no action at that time. I will be back up the 14th and will check out north of Kelleys if the eyes are still there. and trolling....
I am going up Thursday to fish this area. unfortunately, I am not set up to slow troll yet, but I will post any good results. Gonna try drifting bottom bouncers and see what happens. Any advice would be appreciated. I am still learning this method.
Hey Rebel-1 - I probably saw you Sat. I too started Sat am just North of Green and trolled towards Rattlesnake and then West. Only picked up 2 walleye. We were fishing by 5:40am. Only 1 other boat out there. I ended up moving over to North of Kelly's and trolled - picked up only 1 more. About 3pm, decided to drift as the wind was good. We picked up 8 more in about 3 hours drifting 2oz bottom bouncers. Red was our best color but Pink/Purple worked too... Give me a shout on Channel 68 next Sat. I'm in a Green Lund Grand Baron - "Eye-Catcher" on the back... Good luck.
Peelebound - you should catch fish - try fishing on the West side of Middle Island. We picked up some fish here real close to the Canadian border... Report back and let us know.
jkr,
Was planning on going up this week-end but saw the marine forecast of 9 to 12 ft. waves and decided to go turkey hunting. I will be up next Fri. Sat. and Sunday morning. Will give you a shout on 68. Fish ON.
Rebel-1
Thursday was a bust for me. Wind was a little more than predicted and I only made it as far as the light house. Ended up perch fishing with a little success but nothing to brag about. I need a bigger boat!!!! Keep the Kelly's reports coming. I like fishing this area. Good Luck all.
Rebel-1 and Peleebound - I'm heading up and should be North of Kelly's fishing by 6:30pm friday and will be out by 5:30am Sat. Give me a shout so we can compare notes... Eye Catcher is our boat name (Big Green Lund if you see me out there)
hope to be out Friday also in same area- Kellys west and north of bird. I run on 68 and go by SomThin Fishy, 24' blue thompson. Plan on fishing Fri, sat & sunday. Like to meet up or make phone contact with some of you guys that fish this area also- Ron
Hope to meet and talk with you guys on Fri. Sat. Sun. I have your handles written down and I have a 24' Hard top, Pro-Line, W/A .. Should be good fishing...
I go by Rebel-1
Hey guys, I'll be fishing this Saturday between Green and Rattlesnake for starters, i'm in a 21 ft Seaswirl open bow , white with blue stripe. I will also be monitoring channel 68. Goodluck everyone.....give a shout for eyezcrazy.
Guys:
I am new here, but also planning a trip to Kelly's coming from Michigan for Fri/Sat. Handle is Jefferson - blue/white glass boat. Will be on 68, might I enquire about your handles so that I could touch base on the water? (Will gladly share info.)
All the best.
Give me a shout on 68. My handle is BizWiz. We will be fishing all weekend starting Friday morning. Looks like a great weekend for fishing. Sleeping on boat at PIB
Everyone posted their handles - so far, we've got "Rebel-1", "Somthin Fishy", "EyeCrazy", "PeleeBound", "Jefferson", "Biz Wiz" and me, "Eye Catcher" - although I think there is another "Eye Catcher" up on Erie so call me "Lund Eye Catcher" so we don't get confused (I'm in a big Green Lund Grand Baron that has "Eye Catcher" name on the back of the boat).
Calling for some rough water friday evening but looks good for Sat...
Do most of you plan on drifting with harnesses or trolling (with harnesses and/or reef runners?) Should be a good drift fri eveing with 3 foot waves and good wind...
We will drift fish crawlers most of the time. If the wind lays down we will cast.
You are very gracious.
My plan is to troll Reef Runners, Harnesses, Spoons. Probably with focus on the Harnesses.
I plan to stay in a motel in Sandusky and put the boat up overnight at Battery marina.
Anyone out there fish the reefs off of Marblehead with success at this time of year, or is the action all all Kelly's?
Its pretty much anywhere around the reefs. I think if you are looking for bigger you need to go deeper. I have a friend that fished both the reefs and between SB and Kellys last week. He said he caught smaller ones around the reefs. I think he was fishing in front of Besse on the reefs. He caught some very nice walleye's between the islands and north of Bass. He caught 2 fish Ohio walleye's in about 35-40 fow north of Kelly's. One was 29 and the other was 31.
The marine forecast has changed a bit for this week-end. I have been at several sites, but there will be more wind than reported yesterday. Waves 2 to 4 ft. on Fri. subsiding to 1 to 3 in afternoon, earlier they were predicting 1 to 3 ft. Looks like I will be drift fishing, and if so, using harnesses. May have to put out the wind sock. Sat. is looking better with 1 to 3 ft. Depending on Fri. out come will dictate what we do on Sat. & Sunday. Looking forward to a great week-end. Camp fires Thurs., Fri. & Sat. nights. Venison back straps, walleye in deep frier, bake patatoe, rabbit in the crockpot with barbaquie sauce. It doesn't get any better than that. It will be a great week-end no matter what, for the comrodery with friends is PRICELESS..
Get the Net...fish on...
looking for a couple to fish with friday, my group wont be ready till Saturday trip, willing to go out on my boat or share gas costs on another? Really just have to fish on friday- any of you kellys island fisheman let me know- I'll meet at a dock-fish on- Got to get it when the weather permits-Ron
Does anyone have a good tip for a hotel that won't cost me my casting arm? Some place with boat parking, Thanks in advance.
We might be staying at The Penninsula - I heard it's about $40 - not sure about boat parking though...
That's a good place. We've stayed there many times. They do have boat parking
Will be there tonight, book your rooms now asap- thay fill up fast, they are the cheapest and Cleanest. Bait store and restaurant next door also.
will be up tomoro afternoon to stay at my place for the weekend. i will be goin out sat n sun and trolling 40 jets n dipsys. prob fish around starve island and troll right for kellys and see what happens unless i get any other tips. heard there catching fish off the kelly shoals also. so might might wanna try over there. good luck.:D
Not sure about this weekend expecting first grand child any minute. Count me in though Labshavit white Bayliner.
Staying at the Knights Inn in Sandusky. Travelocity rate was about $40 / night plus tax. Am at the hotel now. Continental Breakfast, WIFI, fridge, microwave, and coffee maker in room. Clean and friendly service. Close to marinas in Sandusky. Never been to this hotel before but so far so good.
Thanks for the replies on the hotels, 40.00 a night is much better than what I am used to paying. Now I need to find out where the penninsula is.
Good luck this weekend! I will probably just call on channel 68 for the 'walleye.com" group and see who responds tomorrow. Thanks again everyone.
You guys find them on Saturday, will not get out till Sunday-have to take son to Newark for AAU basketball tourney. Will be listening to chatter on 68 and will help you guys catch them.:)
I never heard Rebel-1, Somethin Fishy, BizWiz, etc.. on the radio so not sure if you guys made it up. I fished the area we talked about (NW of Kellys) and it was slow on Sat. We managed 11 eyes Sat - most drift fishing harnesses and 2 oz bottom bouncers with 2 of those caught trolling (1 on harness and 1 on little ripper). Fish from 6am - 5pm - long day of fishing for only 11 walleye. Funny thing though, out of 4 guys fishing, 1 guy caught 9 of the fish - very strange. 1 guy caught nothing but sheepheads and not a single walleye. How did the rest of you do? Saw lots of boats fishing the East side of Kelly's - not sure if they caught much though...
i heard there was a early bite on the east side of kellys and then it was slow after that.
Yea - bite was better when the wind was coming from the West Sat am. Then, got sunny and calm and trollers were out but was still somewhat slow. Heard on the radio "Shelly" was doing ok - I think her boat got 11 or so all trolling spoons I believe. About 3pm, wind shifted out of the east and waves picked back up. Only caught 1 more with the eastern wind...
JKR, I only got to fish Friday around Niagra and west of the islands it was very slow. I called for the Walleye.com group on the radio as well and didn't get any response.
Your guy that caught most of the fish might have been using a different line, I have noticed I catch more fish with clear mono line. My Rods rigged with a tinted line never seem to produce as well.
EyeCrazy - I heard they were killing the walleye over there North of Niagra all the way to Canadian line on Saturday. Were you fishing the reef or north of Niagra in deeper water? Also, I was the one catching the fish Sat and I was using fireline while the others were using mono - doesn't make sense to me! Although all of us were using the same type of worm harnesses with same leader's (about 3 ft leaders on mono).
Did you ever try fire line tied with a fluorocarbon leader at the end? You get the best of both lines, little to no stretch fireline and a clear leader to get more hits. I have been fishing this way for about 2 years, I think it helps.
I'm coming up June 3-6 hope to see you up there.
Was out on east, south, and west kellys. long days, nice weather for a change- but not alot of keepers. Had alot of large sheep head and W Bass. Going to try again this Fri, Sat and Sun. Probablly same areas, different tactics- speed, colors and crew- Anybody from here out there, send a shout out on 68 and I'll report all i can to get on fish- Ron
jkr....we fished the 22 fow range just off the reef and only took 2 then we fished 30 fow west of Middle Bass where there were awesome marks but no takers. I thought they might be turned on by Saturday.
Eyecrazy.... I will have to try out the fire line with a mono or flurocarbon leader, I've never used the fire line.
Do you think people realize the subtile difference in our user names?
Eyezcrazy some people might, I'm sure one will .
Anyway I tie a leader about 5 feet long the nice thing about this is you can feel the slightest bites and when hung up (if you use a lighter test leader line than fireline) you only lose 5 feet of line.
By the way when I come up I' be in East harbor state park if weather permitting. I have a 246 mile drive one way.
