Illegal. Bait cave usually has a good supply. When we fish michigan waters. Put in at state launch site down the road . By the way are you doing your fishing excursion this year. Count me in for 3.
So if I launch in Michigan and fish in Ohio I need to buy bait in Ohio?
Strange law I never knew about lol. I get the law but how could they ever enforce it?
Ask for your receipt for proof.
I've heard it happening.
IN ACCORDANCE WITH OHIO ADMINISTRATIVE CODE
(OAC)1501: 31-13-04:
It is unlawful to sell as bait, or use as bait, any fish or aquatic
insect not already established in waters of Ohio over which the
Wildlife Chief has control. Further, it is unlawful for any person
to release any fish or aquatic insect into waters of the state, or
waters under control of the Division of Wildlife, from which it
did not originate without first obtaining permission from the
Wildlife Chief.
What about Goldies ? And what do you do with your left over ones?
If emerald shiners are already in Ohio waters how is it illegal?
Even though they areally in Ohio waters, none of us truly know where the bait originally came from, baby Asian carp look so much like emerald shiners it's not even funny, not worth the risk of one being shipped and turned loose, it's not hard to bag the left overs, freeze for later or just toss out.
I take all leftover bait- minnows or leeches and give them a drink of 91% rubbing alcohol or cheap vodka and place in freezer. They work great, sometimes better then live baits do.

The key word is: " not already established in the waters of Ohio"

I would imagine this person could make your day have some new horizons under the right circumstances. Seeing that he is a former wildlife officer and supervisor for the division.
