Any body fish Dunkirk lately? if so how did you do?
Anybody fish Dunkirk lately? If so did you have any luck? I don`t know where i should go first,Barcelona, Dunkirk,or Sturgeon point. HELP!!!!
Start out at 80 foot of water, Halfway to Dunkirk from the Catt and go west. It's easier to go out of Dunkirk or Barcelona. The fish will be there till the lake temperatures drop to the mid 60's.
Saturday wx permitting I'm gonna troll the int border from the steel plant to past Sturgeon Pt. I'm thinking that the yellows are coming back in. We shall see.
fished that stretch pretty hard today, only managed two, and a couple bonus perch off the riggers.
Screen was pretty scarse.
Fished off dunkirk yesterday. 90 fow picked up three and lost a few behind the boat. Could have limited out. Fish seemed to be a little picky, they were down there just not many takers.
I limited out in 2 hours at brockton shouls but I went out early and didnt have a single one til 11:30 and by 1:30 I had my limit it was weard I never seen them yellows bite like that during the day and the water was flat as glass!!! i just cept circleing my marker bouy after the first yellow straght out from the water tower in 76 to 82 feet of water I went there cuz I saw a charter bring up 1 or 2 in just a few miniutes!
so we've been doing good around buffalo harbor, trolling the outside breakwall at night. but then they just disappear. and i mean we are marking baitfish schools and gamefish(eyes') just below the schools. picking up fish, (we are trolling of course) then on the way back through again everything is gone. now last night we got two right off the bat. one at 845 another at 920. then we couldnt find them or the baitfish. tried out deeper20-30, nothing. are these fish (bait and eyes) moving right up on the breakwall at niight? anyone? it was like dead water on the sonar for hours, so we went in.
Beth Steel ! I heard (1st hand) that they are catching 'eyes by the dozens in 15 fow in front of the steel plant. I was out in 65-70 fow Sat and it was not worth the 2 that I caught battling the winds out of the west.
As soon as the weather lets up I will try the steel plant. (That's almost a good guarantee that the schools will have moved by then). Theory is that with all the rain, the bait are in shallow now and fish are feeding.
Where is Beth Steel? Is there a launch in the area?
head out south from Buffalo by the windmills
I think u should head down below donnelleys wall and fish the shalows in 10 feet to 5 feet the eyes come in several miles from the open lake to trap and pray on the emeralds all summer long its not unusual for eyes to travel several miles from day time to night to feed at night in the summer from the round house to the fish market wall is a mager mager feeding ground for the eyes all summer long u should start there becouse depth wise it is safest to fish there becouse there is rocks and boulders below the round house and near the ripples on the lower streches of the fish market wall that can be dangerous. if you start about 200 feet down from donnelleys wall and troll straght up towards the lower end of the wall when you get about 40 feet from the wall vear out 40 to 50 feet out from the wall and continue parallel to the wall about 150 feet then turn out lake side and repeat the pass. a floating rapella 150 feet behind the boat with acouple split shot 4 to 5 feet infront of it should give you consistant limit catchesfrom 9 pm til an hour before day light. I know this method works and I hope you try it!!!! plz post back how you did if you tryed it!
Yeah Bethlehem Steel is where the 8 windmills are. It's right adjacent to the south entrance to the harbor.
Is there a launch in the area? How deep? Any tips would be helpful...THANKS!
Yeah, the NFTA small boat harbor on Fuhrman Blvd is 2 miles away.Quote:

have you fished it lately. they are not there. try that almost every night out. not getting fish. round house? thumbs down. outer break wall is where its at. black/silver. blue/silver. and chartruse perch. youll get yourself in BIG trouble out there if you dont know the water. end of donnlys wall goes from 18ft to 1 ft. in seconds trolling. that an thats the beginning of the rocks after the sand bar. stay in 12- 14fow. safe there.
well. we trolled the slag piles parrel from shore starting out at the outer edge at 35 ft. and wourking back and forth all the way across the shoal. nothing. no schools. not even a straggler. we covered from 3ft-12ftdown with three rods out. then moved to the mid gap to the north gap, to north north wall and finally donnleys wall. SKUNKED!!! this weather must have pushed them back out to deeper water. only marked a few small schools of baitfish. nothing like before. so the thread continues...... where are the walleye??????
We went from the departure buoys all the way to Seneca Shoals this evening and did not mark one, no bait fish, no Walleye. Last week the screen was black with them. We made a drift on the way in and got one in the River in 25ft. The wind drove them out somewhere. Hopefully it is better by the weekend.
Went to Dunkirk again, we gotta be nuts. Bent my prop, don`t use the first ramp at Dunkirk, the water is really shallow. Engine over heat, forgot to close intake on out drive.Lost a cannon ball, accidents happen right? I`m thinking i`m a jinx. What do you say? Also did i mention we caught no Walleye . Where are the Walleye?
I fished Dunkirk area Thursday, picked up 2. Talked to a bunch of guys back at the launch and nobody had done all that well, very few nets out. If you noticed there was a ton of bait on the screen, I mean loads of it. Could be the culprit for the slow fishing.
fished today tried 60 to 70 fow didnt get any ran out pass elk turn back toward ne and went half way back to walnut pick one and that was it i think we where about 150 to 160 back . walnut
I got out onto the lake at 7 this AM. As I was leaving the small boat harbor I saw the windmills spinning at 12-13 rpm. I was hoping for a calm day on the lake but as I cleared the harbor, I was greeted with 3-4 ft waves. I started trolling about 1/2 mile out and right away I caught a nice 3# walleye. He fought half way between a sheephead and a bass. I put him on the stringer and kept trolling west. By 9 AM I picked up a 1 1/2 # bass and it was getting really windy. By 10 the winds died doen and the lake started to flatten out so I trolled all around the international buoy in 42 fow : nothing. Later I trolled back in a hit a 3.5 # bass an a sheephead. After I threw the bass back in, I was thinking I should have kept it to eat. Anyone ever eat bass ?
6 hrs of fishing one walleye. It's a lot of work. (I'm still going up and down).
BTW, if the windmills are 10 rpm or less the water is pretty calm.
We also was at it again yesterday, Left Grand Island RAMP 8:AM headed For the lake, surprized again with 3-4 footers. We trolled, we drifted we tried spinner and worm, we tried stick baits, no walleye. Somebody please tell me what i`m doing wrong.I`m using copper colored spinners, blue & black bomber-A stick baits, i even bought a green renosky, i over heard two guys talking at the bait shop, so i said why not try it, this could do the trick. No luck. Where are the walleye.
Personally, after fishing for yellows for 50 years, the only thing that consistently works are worm harnesses with big fat juicy crawlers. It doesn't matter what color except that under some lighting conditions (dark, sun, overcast, etc.) some colors are better than others so that the fish are attracted by sight. At 40-50 fow, the light is usually attenuated quite a bit, so that clean, polished, reflective spinners work best. Assuming that we won't get lucky enough to troll right through a school, it is important for the fish to see the bait from a long ways away as possible. Once they see it, if they are curious or hungry, they will check it out, then strike.
Having said all this, there aren't near anywhere as many walleye as there were 5o years ago when commercial fishermen plied the lakes in the deep water. Let's hope it gets better.
With my little boat I am not going out 10+ miles to troll at 80 ft. So I guess I will just enjoy the suspense of whether I will catch the big one.
Walleyerick, thanks for the info. I love walleye fishing and is willing to pay a charter .Do you know any that guarantee walleye? I want to learn when where and how to catch walleye on the Eastern end of Lake Erie. I will not stop until i learn.
If you can get a money back guarantee, take it ! Personally I'd be surprised if you could get one. When the season opens up in May, the walleye are just done spawning and they are in shallow water. The water is probably low 50s.
Later on as the temp rises in L Erie, they usually go to deeper water because they like it cooler.
But who knows ? Someone said a while back "that's why they call it fishing, not catching". Truer words were never spoken.
Walleye like to run in schools, but the bigger ones are mavericks and they travel alone.
Walleyerick, i had a charter on lake Wylie, North CAROLINA. The charter was money back or a free outting. We fished for crappie. Had a ball. Where are the walleye?
Lake Erie is a big lake and they could be anywhere ! It is about 10,000 sq. miles in area. If a charter boat guarantees walleye or your money back, let me know. If you have a sonar fish finder that should help locate reefs and schools, but it's still a big lake and even the best hi tech equipment won't guarantee fish. If I find 'em, I'll let you know where.
Good luck.
I was out there trying to catch a few of those fish Sat. & Sun. Sat. I left Strugeon Pt. and went west 9 miles trolled east - only got one silver bass. I was by myself. Sun. I went east out of Sturgeon Pt. about a mile - trolled east with the waves about 7 miles. NO HITS! Decided to call it quits at about 12:15 pm. Popped the downrigger - found something heavy on it. Played it for several minutes - Big Ass channel cat. I was trying to get the hook out of it and David was reelin in the other lines and found a WALLEYE on one line hooked by the gill. They are biting funny these days. He tried to lift it but fell off. Where are the Walleye?? Last Fri. David and Ed went out of Dunkirk - saw alot of fish on the screen but NO HITS?? Whats going on??
Captainjoe, Thanks for the reply. I fished Dunkirk two weeks in a row, nothing.Fished local walleye drifts on the Eastern end of lake erie ( buffalo ) nothing. We fished on an average three days a week. You would think sooner or later we`d get luck one day. Where are the walleye?
The best reports are from the PA line area west of Barcelona. The walleye are not relating to structure, more likely suspended in the water column. Look for bait schools on the bottom in really deep waters, over 85 feet. A real good sign is I never have seen in many years the amount of young emerald shiners feeding on the surface plankton. Worm harnesses with dipsey set to cover the water column 55 to 65 feet down seem to be producing the best. It is late August and the walleye are out deep in the cooler waters there, this is good because when you find them, they are like "shooting fish in a barrel". When the lake temperatures drop to 65F, then they will return to the shallows off Buffalo.
Yesterday afternoon I trolled from the upper river all around the old lighthouse, the water intake, Waverly shoals (on the Canadian side) in shallow waters. No walleye. But I did get a few nice bass. I brought the bigger one home to eat, and I skinned it and grilled it. I don't particularly like the taste. Nothing compares to walleye.
So in the future, all my bass go back. BTW, the reason I fished that area was that a Canuck friend of mine was reporting that walleye were in the shoals. If they were, you couldn't prove it by me. I was running 2 lines with harnesses. Believe it or not, I got the bass on green and yellow #5 flatfish on 4' leader. Anybody remember flatfish ?
Walleyerick, sorry you didn`t catch any walleye. I`m in the same boat as you. But i have a question . When you trolled yesterday did you use dipsys with worm harnesses? Where are the walleye?
No dipsey just chugging irons w 4 ft leader and harness at the end with a fat crawler on it. I fish 3-4 ft off bottom, but there are lots of weeds where I was. It was a pain in the ass, which is why I switched to a flatfish that floats.
Personally, I'm not sold on dipsy divers.
Tried our luck today, 8-28-08. Got to our spot , started fishing around 9:00 oclock AM. The weather called for two footers or less. Well everything was OK for about two drifts before all hell broke lose. Rain , wind and white caps, need i say more. don`t ask how many walleye we caught please. I get that from my wife each time we go fishing. Where`s the walleye, where`s the walleye, I`m sick of her asking me that. I tell her one of these days,,,, one of these day`s, we`re gonna limit out, she just laugh. Then i tell her , at least we did`nt get skunked. We caught sheep head , gobeys and a few small bass. We were drifting with worm harnesses until the wind and rain blew us off the lake. Any boby catching any walleye? Where are the walleye?
Went out this morning, started fishing about 8:00, 8:30 AM. Right off the bat my partner caught one ( walleye ). The very next drift, i caught a nice one. I said maybe this is the day we`ve been waiting for. The water was nice , just alittle ripple, the sun was shinning, everything was perfect except the wind. It was comimg out of the West and then switch kinda Northerly. So we trolled , could not drift the way we wanted. We were useing worm harnesses, color ( copper ). Still everything was OK until the battery died on us. No more walleye today. Going to try it again tomorrow . Where are the walleye?
Well the same as yesterday, another nice day,,, can you believe two days in a row and maybe three. We started fishing about 8:00 AM . Things started off a little slow at first, nothing but white bass, gobys and sheephead. They ate a lot of our worms.Things got better around 10:30 AM, ( walleye ). We trolled with the electric motor. Our choice of bait ,worm harnesses, color copper or black did the trick today. The only problem we had , we ran out of worms. Those little gobys are a pain in the neck. Total catch six walleye and one real nice jack perch to bring home.i caught three walleye. Still no limit on walleye, Where are the walleye?
Six eyes is still not a bad catch, actually for this time of year in the extreme eastern basin it is quite good.
all you guys looking for walleye ,don't be discouraged.the thermalcline is setting back up and the eyes are grouping back up and are active again.i hear you guys talk like they dissapeared.they didn't with all the cold fronts and 360 degree winds thru most of august they didn't follow their normal patterns.note to nay sayers remember when times are tough you stop fishing for walleye and start hunting for walleye.if the high pressure holds and bright sun keeps shining by tuesday things will be back to normal.we limited out the last 2 days much deeper and further west than we've been all year.keep the faith there's a lot of good fishing yet.the best is yet to come.good fishing tom & john
