If someone could invent nightcrawlers that are resistant to these fish he would make a fortune. Any advice to keeping them off while trolling harnesses?

I have a friend who uses/ties 1 long shank hook harnesses. Splits every crawler into 3 pieces, slides a piece onto the hook, then a 3 to 4 inch rubber worm ( sometimes color matters) up behind the real crawler. The rubber crawler keeps the worm on very well. He does exceptionally well. Typically they get 3 limits from ea. doz worms on average.
Just a thought.
