I thought there was already a small breeding population of Grass Carp in Lake Erie, especially the bays and harbors. I know they have been caught there before but I am not sure of those where sterile escapees or not. I know for sure they have been breeding in the Ohio river and other rivers and lakes for a while.
I don't think they reproduce like the other Asian Carp we are all afraid off. They tend to eat grass and weeds and when they run out of those or get big enough they eat pretty much the same thing a common carp would eat. They do like to eat off the surface if possible, floating bagel chips with a hook pressed into it and no weight is a very common way to catch them. They tend to have a high mortality rate when caught or during extreme weather conditions.
The other Asian carp (Bighead and Silver) or such a threat due to their ability to breed to large numbers and the fact that they are filter feeders. Similar to a more native paddle fish but they can get to much larger numbers having a larger impact on a body of water. Those 2 breeds are the ones we have to really watch out for, the commons and grass have been here so long I don't think they are going to get any better or worst for the environment.
Certain writers: They sure know how to push the panic button when it comes to making a dollar. This article has said nothing more than we already know but has said it in a way that sounds like the sky is falling.
