I think maybe it was because the waves were coming out of the North East. They were probably biting better because your bait was traveling the same direction the fish were moving.
JMO.
The fish biting only when trolling either with or against the waves has happened to us before. What we figured out was our trolling speed read the same either way, but the baits we were using whether it was body baits or harnesses were being presented at a different speed and depth because of the current. Try adjusting your speed in the direction the fish aren't biting.
I believe it to be a speed over ground issue. You were most likely going into the waves dialed in to the perfect speed and going to fast when you were going with them. As little as a .1 of a knot per hour can be the diffrence in catching and not catching. Pay attention to you GPS SOG both directions and adjust.
