I have been part of the fishing scene on lake Erie for almost as long as I can remember, and it started in the early 50's but I was considered to young to be on the big lake until 1955. In the 50's what now is Lake Shore Drive was St. Rt. 2, the Port Clinton City beach was located along what is now West Lake Shore Drive formerly Rt. 2, between the draw bridge and the Moose Club which was formally the site of Blue Heron restaurant and the whole area in the winter along that beach after ice up would be lined with Ice Buggies/Ice Taxis. Across the road there would be piles and piles of commercial fishing nets most freshly coated that previous fall with what looked like tar. There would be numerous Ice Shanties scattered about off shore as far as one could see in almost all directions, perch jerkers were the prevalent ice fishermen back then. So yes this video did bring back memories of my childhood days along the Erie shoreline.
I never saw this done myself but my dad was told several times at more than one of the many bait stores we used that fuel oil delivery trucks would drive from Catawba to the Islands to deliver fuel to the islanders. I was present and heard some of these claims myself. True or not I don't know but that was the claim.
