When is it to rough to fish?

I will be bringing my new boat to the Western Basin next weekend. I am not a newbie but fish mostly in the south for stripers. I have fished Lake Erie several times but never out of my own boat. I have been watching the weather and so far it looks like it will be a good long weekend but I have questions about how high fishable waves are? When I see the forecast for waves of 2 foot or less I don't think it's that big of a deal. My question is when does it become a big deal?
