I went out after some minnows today at the foot of ferry and they were skittish and hard to get. That was around 2:30pm. Just an FYI.
Good luck tomorrow I hope to be there as well.

has anybody fish the buffalo area for perch or should i just go to sp thx
milt
Went out to the same spot I hit a couple of weeks ago (6 miles west of sturgeon) and caught nothing but small perch. Pretty fast action at first, but these fish weren't even close to keeping. We moved a number of times, 60 to 70 feet of water and never caught a perch 10 or more inches. I marked various schools in different areas but nothing big. We caught a lot of small fish, but moved a lot as well trying to find the big boys. Even tried a mile out in front of sp where we caught them in november last year but no luck there. (only tried for 15 minutes) Seemed like most boats did similar from who I talked to and lots of boats moving around.
How about that north wind that picked up out of nowhere? Wind started blowing and white caps appeared like some evil curse haha. Then things died down and it actually got real calm out there.
Got out this Am. West of SP 70 fow caught lots of small ones kept 80-100 better ones maybe 8-10 over 13". Lots of boats out today! Fished dons. wall last night got 2 a 21 & 24 " eyes.
Went out SP. Like you said WNYGUY. Nice, wind, sun, hot, cool etc. Many fish. The first time limiting out. Thank you Barry & crew. He told us where to go & and j used the salted minnows that he gave me 2 weeks ago. Lets get some big ones next week. Fishkilker- what do you have to say? Where have you been?
Way to go capt, glad to hear you did well today my ole ride crapped out so lookin for new wheels ha ha. I can't complain the ford was beat preety hard since i bought it. My old saying is its either gonna go or she's gonna blow well she picked option B lol. Oh yeah where is fishon51? He's been quieter than fishkiller ha ha
Pheasants are yummy little morsels to barry. Bread up some fingers n fish make a great surf n turf. Are they preserve birds?
Lineman were there many boats with you? One of my spots was 70 ft and there were only a couple of boats there when I stopped about 10:30am. (It grew to about 8 or so) I threw back almost all of mine the majority were under 9.5 inches.
I was out today with a perch charter, we ended up with 36 keepers over 10 inches, and well over 100 that we throw back. We also had a nice 8.5 pound Walleye as a bonus. 68 foot of water around the 40 / 10 line. A couple of guys from work we're fishing next to us they ended up with 50 keepers. They were keeping some smaller fish than us. It was tough getting bait out of the river today, but we got enough for 2 boats worth. I should be going back out either Wednesday or Friday.
I counted 37 boats by us. There was another fleet that looked like they were in front of the Catt. We threw a bunch back but I don't like that most die. I wish I knew what to do with the bladder& let them live, any ideas??
Saturday was the first day that I started popping bladders and it seemed to work. The first few small ones I was tossing right back in and they just floated on the surface, only briefly as the seagulls were just waiting for us to toss one out and they would grab it. I remember reading an article in in-fisherman about popping bass bladders when they stick out, they called it fizzing and claimed there was a study done saying the bass had a better chance of living. They did it with a needle, I just used my hook and I noticed the perch immediately swam back down deep. The trick is to pop the bladder not past the barb. Obvious I know.:)
I started off in that fleet of boats I think when I got out there, there were 2 other boats and when I moved after getting tired of small fish and lots of boats there were 43 boats close to us. I did see another fleet outside the cat, got about 1/2 mile? close to them when we moved and heard on the radio they were doing about the same, lots of small fish.
Just out of curiousity, is this normal to catch so many small ones like this? I'm still kind of new at this, only 2nd year of perch fishing on erie. I'm of the impression that if you are only catching small fish, move and try and locate a school with bigger fish. Or do some people just stay and wait out the smaller fish?
The funny thing is that a lot of those fish I threw back if I was ice fishing on chautaqua I would have kept most of them.
I know the "small ones" would be big ones on other lakes. I think we get spoiled when getting the big Erie jacks that we get. We use to get 8 inchers on Silver lake years ago & say they were the big ones (silver lake specials we called them). Seneca Lake has big perch if anyone ever goes there, thats fun but I haven't done that in years.
Sometimes you gotta keep them small ones if you wanna fill your freezer. I'm happy with 8 inchers in western end. bigger ones are a bonus for us.
We did the same thing- popping the bladder with the tjp of the hook. It's good to see them go straight to the bottom. I was off the white wall (Evangola St. Park) probably 3 / 4 miles out. Funny thing i didn't even mark the spot on my fish finder. Fishkiller did you launch out of SP? It was shallow. Did you take the small boat or the big one?
Fished out of SP this AM. Same thing, lots of small ones, only kept 25-30 over 10 ". big one was 13.5".
Did you try popping the bladder?
I'd be happy with 25-30 like that. What kind of ratio did you have throwbacks to keepers? When I went out I mean all of them were small the last time. I'm not whining just one of those days.
CaptainJoe I launched my 18ft IO out of sp without any problem, but the water did get a little shallow. In fact they have a sign up that says very low water caution. I talked with one of the guys who works there about the shallow water, possibility of a sand bar and his advice was to not get too close to those rocks, and when you get out head straight towards the city for a bit until it gets deeper. (not parallel to shore)
Hey nice to hear from our brothers out west! Half pole I have read the western forums from time to time about perch fishing, and I kind of think that the perch tend to run bigger in the eastern basin, and maybe less numbers of fish. There have been a few times when I went out where I didn't catch my limit, but caught more keepers than throw backs. (by a large percentage)
I guess what I would like to do is learn to target the larger sized perch, rather than just go out and pull up small fish. Maybe it isn't possible and I'm smoking something I shouldn't be :)
Yeah the perch are a lot bigger in the central and eastern basin than in western end. don't no if its because the deeper water or what. gonna try to schedule a trip with fishkiller next year sometime to see what fishing is like up there on your end for the monster perch.
I would say the ratio was 15-20 to1 . And yes we did poke the bladder & most did go down. I just wonder if they live after that?
I wondered the same thing, are they just swimming down and dying? It seemed better than just watching them float though. I will see if I can find that article, I may have tossed the magazine.
No fishing for me this weekend out of town wedding.
Looks like no fishing for everyone with the weather and winds that's predicted. :(
Copo you been hunting or fishing? I am looking at trucks hope to have new to me ride by mid week if all goes well. Then its fishin or maybe chase a buck.
I haven't been fishing since we salmon fished in September. I hunted opening day. Did an evening hunt. Saw 20 deer. 2 nice bucks. One was def a shooter. It's been to warm to hunt, and I hate all the leaves still on the trees. This weather has been crap for me fishing. Even with this rain we've been getting all the inland and lake trib streams are very low and clear. When do the browns run and spawn? I need to come up ur way and pick up a female brown for eggs. Marsh creek I think we talked about was good? Good luck on truck hunting
If this rain tonight continues i would try sunday it'll finally draw fiah from lake o up into creaks its cold enough just need the volume now. It is time and steelies are showing already.
Well the new boat hauler is a buick lol
Didn't know buick made trucks, especially for pulling boats! Whats up with that?? :D
Yeah rainier sure it'll haul it rated to 6000# awd 275hp
Its just a straight awd wish it had a transfer case for low range and 2 wheel capabilities but the ride and extras inside made me forget about not having them. I know if you step on it, it wastes no time moving along. Also there is almost no exterior noise inside quiet as can be.
Vechicle sounds nice , good luck with it. Camera 2 looks good at SP should have gone perching maybe 2morrow. Anyone get any deer yet? Lets see some pics.if any.
Bailey sounds like a good choice. Nice vehicle. Good luck with it.
You needed an envoy for t case options. But it's good it's not the smart Trac. They had issues. But the rainier should pull the boat just fine.

I watched this guy at work during the summer. Someone took a bad shot at him and lost him. He ended up dying in the back yard at work so the local pd gave me a tag.
Nice buck, looks like he had a screws loose by the nuts & bolts laying there. ;) lol
Nice and tall would've been a dandy next year. I wonder if the site would let us run a hunting thread the mods haven't bothered with any of our off thread tangents. Other sites they would be all over it.
That's what I was thinkin on the hunting thread. Most of us on here have been here awhile and know each other. I don't see a problem. Lol. Yeah we moved him with the lawn tractor and trailer. I let my buddy I work with have him. I like to shoot my own deer.
On the other hand I picked a wonderful evening to sit in my stand. Only rained harder when I got in the stand. Got wet, but saw 34 deer.
So when we hunting together copo ha ha. My hot spot was that way till nys upped doe permits now for 4 yrs i would say i was lucky if i saw 34 deer total.
I would like to see a hunting thread with SHORT stories & pics. 34 deer ! Thats a good sit even in the rain. I sat a few years ago in the pouring rain for 10 hrs. & never saw a thing I will never do that again!! Read a story from the pros that big bucks move in the rain, wrong!
