Bailey you are right. But I do have to work next weekend.
Fishkiller someone just blew my surprise secret of hiding in your boat - under the tarp so I could go to Ohio on your excursion.
Everyone check your shrink wrap.
For smartphone users there is an app that shows all the gas stations near your location that sell ethanol free gas. I'm lucky Delta Sonic on Ridge Rd has 2 dedicated pumps that are 91 octane and ethanol free. The app is Pure-gas.org. They also have a web site you can check stations in your area. When I bought my Crestliner I had to sign a waiver of warranty on the boat and motor if I use gas that has more than 10% ethanol in it and the salesman said that if you have problems with the motor the first thing they test is the gas for ethanol. After messing up my snowblower I only run the ethanol free in all my small engines too.
hey poles do you have a two stroke or a four I don't remember signing a waiver when I brought my crestliner in 2008 I have a 150 merc verado
jeff
been useing a ethanol treatment with gas ether sta bil or phase4 guard/ a little goes a long way 8oz for 80 gal with this stuff- all so but on a water separater 30 bucks/ cheep insurance i hope/ no problem so far been running it in 40 mariner and 75etec . takeing etec in shop this week for 300 hr check see what they say
Milt, I have a Mercury 115 4 stroke. Bought it last June. I still use the Stabil marine formula every fill up also. The salesman showed me a picture of the fuel pick up tube in the gas tank they just took apart and it was a mess.
Some years ago I had a problem with my snowblower, the damn thing was hunting all the time. (revving up and down) It was at least 15 years old, so I figured it was due for a carb rebuild, which I did. Get it all back together again, and wouldn't you know it acted the same way, still hunting. So I figure, maybe I screwed up rebuilding the carb, and do it all over again, with another rebuild kit to boot. Get done, and still it's hunting! Now it's getting very close to "snowblowing season", I break down and bring the snowblower into Hodgson's pool, and tell him I give up, I'm sick of working on it, please take a look at it. Next day or so I stop in and he tells me, there's nothing wrong with your snowblower, it's water in the gas. Then he goes on to tell me how may times he's done a snowblower repair, only to have it return because the owner is using ethanol gas and having problems with it. I learned my lesson that day, all small engines get 100% gas, stabilized with an additive, including the boat. I can't imagine how many problems this 15% stuff is going to cause... I don't use stabil, because that's what I used before, but I believe they have changed their product to something more "water" binding.
I could go on and on about ethanol gas. In my line of work I deal with the consequences of it all the time. Ill just mention a few things. 1) phase separation. Ethanol and gasoline do not mix chemically. So after a while the ethanol separates from the gas as it can only be suspended in the gas for a short period of time. One thing I've noticed is when it sits in carb bowls and separates, it leaves these little golden balls( nuggets) that look like pine tree sap. We've had a few 2stroke meltdowns come in that were specifically caused by dirty carbs leaning out the mix. 2) ethanol is alcohol, which draws in water(moisture) from the atmosphere. 3) ethanol gas in smaller engines almost always needs carburator adjustments to richen it up. You will run leaner with ethanol fuel over straight gas. Fuel injection isn't affected as much because it can richen itself and adjust timing. These newer engines should have been built to run on ethanol fuel. I don't know dealers are saying they're gonna test the fuel. Unless they're looking for water. 4) Older bottles of stabil (if anyone has some sitting around still) is NOT ethanol fuel compatible. When mixed it has a chemical reaction and turns your fuel into a gell. They had to revise they're formula just for ethanol fuels. So do not use older bottles of stabil.
5) ethanol gas starts to turn bad in as little as 2 weeks, depending on quantity.
A product called k-100 is a excellent weapon against ethanol fuel. It's made locally (tonawanda), its been tested, and it works. No I don't work for them. But I use it all the time and we have done our own testing of it and its the real deal.
A fuel water separator is a good idea for all boats that can install one. I'm pretty sure all the marinas that sell gas are still non ethanol. Unless they've had to succumb to the poison too.
Great discussion guys. Last year when I got the new boat & motor (225 merc). They told me to just fill up . The engine was made for the 10% ethanol. They didn't recommend any addative. What is interesting my trolling motor is about 5 years old (15 merc big foot) and is hooked to the same fuel line. So far I haven't seen any problems.
+2 on the K-100 this stuff works great. I use it in 4 o/b's , mower & 4x4. It breaks down the water so it will burn. They also claim it boosts the octane up to 2 points. Google their web site & watch the video. I saw a demo. at a sm. engine repair shop & it really seems to do what they say. A bit pricey but it works for me.
heard of x2 & k100 were do i buy
You can get K-100 at Bunny's sm. engine repair shop on Central Ave. & Walley's old gas station at Broadway & Aurora St. is suppose it have it also but not sure about him. both in Lancaster ny. If you go to K-100 web site it shows places to buy it.

I used my zip code 14057 and a list of about 35 locations came up. k100 is pricey as hell. six 8oz. bottles for $50. one 8oz. bottle treats appox. 17 gal. of fuel.
Copo you work with this stuff every day so I'm not even pretending to know more than you. The stuff I use is what Hodgeson' put me on years ago, I don't think they sell it anymore and use something a little different, it's probably kind of similar, the price is at least. It's Octi-Plus made by Well-Worth, which is also made in buffalo, I wonder if they are the same company? As luck would have it, the distributor lives right around the corner from me and I bought a whole case of it. I only live up the road from where you work btw. fishon I think k100 is sold at advance auto if that helps. Poles like copo said it's the older engines (mines an 86) that really have issues, especially rubber and plastic lines, fiberglass tanks that were never designed to be around alcohol and want to get dissolved by it...plus the phase separation you have alcohol in the gas, and the alcohol is water loving and will suck water right out of the air over time, once you get enough water in the fuel it separates out and then the fun starts haha.
Honestly, once everyone is using they're boats all the time and keeping them filled there's no real reason to continue adding additives. Mainly first couple tanks of the season and a good dose at the end.
Copo, $9 for how much ??

Anyone hear how the dredging is going or not going at SP.
I haven't heard. But if you look at Lakevision the picture is stuck on Wed. 4/10/13. I drove by there last Sunday and there was a huge pile of sand in the mouth of the harbor entrance.
Fishon, check my last post under perch fishing, The last I heard SP was still being dredged & that it won't be open until May 15 like last year. A friend of mine called the town & thats what they told him. There were alot of boats going in & out of the Hanover launch.
The company that is dreadging the harbor built a road out into the harbor to be able to bring an excavator in to properly dredge it out. Senator Grisanti (sp?) secured a $100,000 federal grant to have the harbor properly dredged.
Yeah government. :)
Here I am at work. Looking for great reports from you guys. But I don't see any. Maybe everyone is too busy catching fish.
Is nobody night fishing over there tonight? Awfully quiet, I'm trying the Canadian side
Not me. To busy with this yard spring crap and working on my truck ect.
Copo - I'm in the same boat as you. Too much work to do. And my home marina isn't open yet. Sturgeon Pt.
Yeah this long winter really put a damper on spring cleanup and other yearly chores. Hopin to get out soon. My jiggin wrist is gettin rusty lol. The only rods I've used so far this yr is my float rod and my fly rod. ( bailey I know what your thinking lmao and that's inappropriate for here ha ha)
I fished last nite and got skunked talked to a couple of guys at the dock and they got skunked also surface temp was 51 degrees 10fow
Skunked on the Canadian side also :(
I didn't fish but heard 6 was the best anyone did. Think water is too cold yet ??
Surface temp was 42/43 where I tried in Canada. It was pretty barren, no marks, no bait up shallow, the water was so clear I thought I was in Belize. When you guys get fish at night up shallow on your side are you looking for some stained water?
The fish are still actively spawning. And not interested in our offerings.
A friend fished last nite at hamb. & woodlawn, saw lots of fish( Lited eyes) & bait at both places but no fish! Had 54* surface temp.
According to the Bflo News, L Erie water temp is 40 deg. I have no idea where they measure this. I usually use the Canadian buoy at Pt Colburn but the buoy is not active yet. They have water temp, wave heights, wind speed and direction.
Whenever they set it up, find it here :
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45142
National weather service is showing lake erie temp at 46 degrees, this is 30 ft down at the water treatment plant, I think it's at the intake. (roundhouse)
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/buf/laketemps/laketemps.php
Looks like we are 4 degrees above average today.
My sonar says the depth at the water intake is only 18'. I have a Humminbird 581i
Well it started again. Not walleye, bass, musky not fishing at all. It's fast pitch softball time again. We won the opener today in 5 innings 16 to 6. Here we go again. :D
